To many people of Parvpora, the massive island off the eastern coast of the region is best avoided. It was a harsh lesson that their ancestors had to learn when they set sail to discover more lands near the start of time. What they had found was nothing short of a paradise, unconquered by man. A few small colonies that were built up thrived for a time before the settlers made the fatal error of wanting to travel further inland through its forests. Many lost their lives and few made it out of the woods, and hopped onto their ships and set sail back to the mainland, never returning to the island again. The survivors told their tale of the wondrous behemoths found in an open field, those that didn’t exist anywhere else on the realm. Many of these scaly, but feathered creatures were enormous enough to rival the size of beasts such as elephants, chimeras and even dragons. Many were temperate and were only defensive when the settlers came too close to their herds or their young. Some had extremely long necks to reach to the top of the tree, and horns on their heads to ward off others. Some could even fly high above them all and the earth shook with every step taken. But soon others came, those that would hunt after these beasts. They too were rather large but had rows of sharp fangs and piercing talons. Their roars echoed loudly into the air as they stalked the herds, picking out the weakest and slowest. The unfortunate survivors claimed that as they ran back to the safety of their homes, smaller predators came from the woodwork and pursued them with amazing speed. Like wolves, they hunted in packs and entrapped the people into corners where they would merciless slaughter them as others ran as fast as they could to escape to the beach and onto their ships.
As centuries went by, people continued to visit Bakulaw Isle despite the early warnings to see if the tales were true. Those that did make it back confirmed that such things did exist, but what the original survivors didn’t know was that they only saw the tip of the iceberg. Eventually with all the findings made, the isle was deemed far too dangerous for settlement and it is extremely advised to not set foot on it. Although this hasn’t deterred people or their curiosity from exploring it and these Bakulaw creatures nonetheless.
Even before arriving to it, one can run into the risk of meeting with random whirlpools that come and go at different intervals. Past that, one can see the early settlements that still stand, touched by time and the elements. The sub par shacks and other buildings are overtaken by tree branches, as if the island is taking claim of them. Of those that can be entered, the interior is shrouded in dust with a few remaining remnants that belonged to the settlers. Going further inward, miles of forest covers the area, making it very possible to get lost in. It houses animals as such venomous snakes, massive colonies of wasps, and especially the smaller Bakulaw that are either feeding on the vegetation or of the more vicious ones that lay in wait for an unsuspecting victim to trap and kill. There are caverns spread throughout, leading into lengthy dark tunnels that are deathly silent and filled with silky webs the further you travel in. Bones are not uncommon to trip over and spot before hissing sounds are heard. Gigantic spiders wait high on the ceilings for their prey to appear before descending down to ensnare them with their webbing. Even if their prey escapes from the cave, they are not out of danger for these monsters will relentlessly chase after them. Some have even evolved to the point where they gained wings, making them even more terrifying hunters.
In addition to the forest, several open fields can be found housing the larger Bakulaw. Herbivores travel and feed in large herds, constantly looking out for their carnivorous brethren that hunt independently or with a mate. Flightless bright colored birds the size of an average man also live out here, they are shy until provoked in which then they will make use of their dagger like talons to kick and disembowel in self defense.
Not only are the animals there a threat, but various native plants such as the Sirena Huli (or the Siren Trap) are as well. A large blue petal flower that grows in certain parts of the isle, the Sirena Huli has a delicate aroma that can easily lure its victims. Upon sniffing it, the person will find themselves immobilized and hallucinating in bliss for hours. Many deaths have occurred from starvation as a result of constant exposure if they they remain in the trap; that is if they are not eaten by the natives first.
The island has seen visits to this day, mostly by hunters from all over the realm, prepared as much as they can possibly for the unknown just to capture a few rare trophies hang up and for exchanging bragging rights. In recent years, a heavily fortified outpost had been constructed by the shoreline. Housed by both experienced hunters and researchers, they capture and observe many of the creatures they can get a hold of in order to learn more of them. More often than not, they will send for help from the mainland, offering them the thrill of the hunt as well as various rewards.
People are unable to speak of Bakulaw Isle without death being mentioned in the same breath. It is a paradise to behold truly, but it's difficult to not think of it also as a place where nearly everything there wants to kill its guests.
