The understory of Sahel is a lush, exotic landscape comprised of enormous plants, from the trunks and leaves of giant mahogany trees to numerous bushes and shrubs, to massive trees bearing oversize fruits, and even the rarest of all vegetation in Sahel - the Dragonsblood tree. The plants form such a thick canopy that very little sunlight manages to filter through, which is why the plants have grown to such large sizes so that their leaves find the few rays that manage to sneak in.

Further down, the damp and dark forest floor is littered with both small and incredible large mushrooms, thriving in the dark humidity. Foliage decays at an alarming rate on this level, taking only a tenth of the time as it would in regular conditions. The dark, humid air aids in the speed of this decay. The closer to the forest floor one finds themselves, the darker it is - almost as if one is in a cave rather than the middle of a rainforest.

One can always find typical rainforest creatures, such as jaguars, monkeys, leopards, and tree frog, as well as snakes and many species of lizards - even the occasional giant anteater roams the forest floor… but what is truly remarkable about Sahel’s indigenous life is the vast number of humanoid-like insects that inhabit the understory and the forest floor.

The Siwani hold the appearance of a mantis, their long, thin arms and large eyes ideal for stalking their prey, while the Amhara resemble wasps, complete with translucent wings and venomous stingers for defense. The Agaw seem to be ant-like in existence, some even thought to live underground in tunnels like their brethren, while the Maasi are as beetles, complete with antennae sprouting forth from their heads.

While the understory and forest floor may appear beautiful with its giant colorful flowers, fruit-bearing trees, and enormous foliage - do not underestimate its inhabitants. Many of the snakes and lizards are highly venomous, their venom sought after for concocting horribly debilitating poisons.

Little is known about the Siwani, Amhara, Agaw, or the Maasi… are they friendly, or deadly? Few stories circulate about their demeanors, perhaps it is time for new stories to be written.
