Though the war that felled the Great Tree of Parvpora and its gods ended centuries ago, its echoes still shape the Republic of Iria. When the gods fell, their city burned at the hands of those who fought for those gods. Once the fires died, the ruling Mage Council decided that their home would follow a different course from the rest of the world. Their city would never fall under the influence of the so-called divine again.

The city itself is surrounded by a large wall of alchemically treated sandstone, making it very difficult to lay siege to the city. In return for ceasing their research into airships, Iria has a peace treaty with Karith. Two large gates allow entry in and out of the city, one feeding directly from the farms to the markets, and the other from near the Academy into the rest of the city. The walls extend into the sea, helping protect the large natural harbor that the city relies on to bring in goods.

A number of farms and homesteads lay on the outskirts of the city’s territory, sending their produce, woven goods, and livestock to the grand open air markets of Iria. Bartering in many languages can be heard in the markets, as they are open to any who want to bring their goods. Ships from all over Revaliir bring those goods for trade, and leave with the high quality products of Iria.

Movement through the city is either on foot through the neat, narrow streets, or on the many gondolas and small boats that navigate the large canals that crisscross through every part of Iria. The water also feeds the many gardens, especially the Conservatory, which houses an ancient grove of the willows which the city is named for. Buildings tend to be very close to each other, and built of many different materials, depending on their age.

One thing not found within Iria’s walls are temples or shrines of any manner. Its people have wholly embraced a life without the deities, and outsiders say this is because the city’s burning in the past at the hands of believers. But many Irian scholars claim that the gods were never such, only very powerful mortals, and their lack of faith is justified.

Many kafics also dot the streets, serving a strong, sweet brew, as well as pastries with various fillings. Many people can be found sitting in the shade of willows, playing games or engaging in debates about many different topics. Magic, politics, events in the wider world, and even religion are discussed. Often, people remain civil, though discussions can get quite heated.

The most famous landmark is the grand Mage Academy, which dominates the eastern side of the city. It is a sprawling complex of many buildings, and offers education in several schools of magic. It also contains a massive library, which attracts scholars from all over Revaliir. There are also a numbers of schools connected to the Academy, which teach skills like reading, history, arithmetic, and other mundane topics. All citizens of the Republic are offered a basic education at these schools, even if they lack the magical talent to enter the Academy.

Iria is a city of magical learning, freedom from the gods, and above all, an exchanging of ideas. Education is valued by all citizens, and any form of slavery, including indentured servitude, is outlawed. It is a haven for the learned and those willing to learn, and those who cherish freedom of all kinds.
