Tunnel of Love
A classic carnival ride given a spooky makeover! As couples arrive at the starting point of the ride, the skeleton attendant, decked out in a full tuxedo with tails and a top hat, greats them and ushers each couple to a waiting swan boat. But these are not the classic white swans, they are jet black with blood red eyes that glow in the dim light of the tunnel. The seats in each swan are comfy and there is space enough for the couple to either stretch out or cuddle close as the ride starts. Once the couple is strapped in the skeletal host seems to smile at them as he tips his hat and rattles out a simple but expected warning ‘keep your hands and feet in the swan at all times’. Before pulling a level to start the ride.
As the swans start their journey, they pass through a magically darkened doorway, for a second it is pitch black, no matter of night vision or magic can cut through it. But it does only last for a second before a bright sunny-like light brightens the tunnel. Beautiful fall weather can be felt in the air inside the ride, coloured leaves drift lightly down to the ground in the cool breeze. As the ride continues illusionary animals start to appear, rabbits, foxes, birds of various kinds singing in the trees, all getting ready for the coming winter. It is a peaceful scene that any couple would enjoy laying out in the forest just watching life go on around them. As the passage to the next section nears, an attentive person might spy golden eyes watching them in the shadows of the attraction, or did you? Hard to tell, you’re so entranced by your love for the one you’re with it was probably just your imagination.
The passage to the next area starts as the first, pitch black for a second and then lightening up. However, the light is dim as it is later in the evening now and the air much cooler than before. Some of the illusionary animals are gone replaced by their more nocturnal counterparts, deer and elk are grazing, the howls of a wolf pack in the distance. It starts to sink in that this place seems to have no discernable walls, like the landscape goes on forever. The swan suddenly jolts as if struck by something before moving again, however, a little way on there’s a crudely written sign that says ‘apologize for the bump!’.
The waters in the ride are black, somehow blacker than the swan, and don’t seem to have any kind of bottom. However, if you look too long into the ink black water you get the sense that something might be looking back at you, aside from your own reflection.
As the ride continues near the end of the second section the swan stops suddenly with a jolt. Nothing, nothing happens, it as if the swan has gotten stuck. The lights start to flicker the area you have left behind goes dark as night, only a glowstone above you stays lit. Out in the darkness you can hear movement, multiple things moving around, but you can only see the odd shadow slip into view, long enough to see it not long enough to identify it. A creaking noise can be heard close by along with a rattling noise as a skeleton dressed like host, steps into view. It rattles off another apology for the delay in the ride, and it will get the swan going in just a moment. As it is speaking it drops itself into the water, which you see only comes up to its waist. It goes behind the swan and you can hear it tinkering with something before the swan jolts forward. As you watch the skeleton go to leave the water it stops and looks concerned somehow on its expressionless skull before it suddenly gets dragged under the water’s surface out of sight as you pass into darkness one last time.
It's now night in the forest, and things are, not as you expect. Zombies roam the lands, demons fly in the air, ghosts solemnly wonder around, lost in death. The black waters start to roil around the swan as the head of the swan starts to creak and crack and turn to look at you! Its mouth opens to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth as it lets out an evil cackling laugh as straps appear from somewhere to retrain the couple. All of the zombies, ghosts and demons are now looking in your direction as the start to close in, the swan is still moving, but it only has eyes for you! The wind howls now and the temperature drops noticeably, the swan cackles again. ‘you’re mine now’ is screeches as its neck starts to unnaturally elongate towards you both, mouth becoming wider and wider as the beasts around you starts to close in at the edges of the water.
Suddenly, it is light again, those few moments of panic are over, you are not restrained anymore, and the air is warm. ‘I hope the tunnel of love has brought you closer’ the skeleton host intones as you see that you have come to the end of the ride. As the swan stops the skeleton assists anyone that needs it, and bows as you leave. A quick looks back only gets met with a wicked wink of a red eye from the swan.
