Laeto Rainforest Main Description
The Laeto Rainforest sits snugly in the middle of Canelux. It is large and dense, full of flora and fauna from the lowest ground to the tallest canopy. The foliage here is known to shine brightly of all colors when hit by light, especially during the beginning and end of the rainy season. Sadly this beauty is not always enough to merit a visit in the eyes of others. Often, the humid air and prevalence of threats in the Laeto Rainforest keep many travelers away.
In spite of this aversion, however, the rainforest is not uninhabited by sentients. There are many types of tribes in the area, usually hostile, that wander around within its borders, abducting females for wives and attacking other tribes over food and water. Most of them live in ruins deep within the forest that once belonged to kingdoms lost long before their current generations were alive, but still, others live in kapok tree houses far off the ground in other areas of the forest.
Travelers through Laeto often deal with these people as their primary threat, though they are not the only danger present in the trees. The fauna of Laeto are also far from harmless. For example, while the rivers of Laeto are beautiful and plentiful, connecting the heart of the forest to the oceans nearby, they are filled with predators. Crocodiles, piranhas, giant leeches: you name it. There are plenty of nasties in those waters that would like to take off a limb or two from unwary adventurers. On land, there are also poisonous critters, predatory plants, giant ant mounds, lions, tigers, bears, and, oh my, much worse. Diseases are also present, making the rainforest quite a dangerous place to be for the unprepared.
But there are plenty of riches to be had in this area for those brave and skilled enough to make the journey. Many products - such as mahogany wood, giant bee honey, cacao beans, and the exotic durian fruit - are highly desirable products across all of Revaliir, and most grow only in this area. Mamlak, in particular, makes a great profit off of harvesting the forest’s riches and refining them into artisan goods. Even if foraging isn’t your thing, there are rumors of treasure that remains in the hands of some of the tribes at the center of Laeto, but good luck to those who seek to pry it from their hands. You’ll need it.
