"I'm sure we can manage. Your daughter is a sweet girl, and from what you've told us she's stronger than she appears physically and spiritually." His mother said with a smile. When Aelos mentioned the possible ways to help Effie regain control over her other 'self', Rashomaru looked down in embarrassment. He was sure Nui was grinning, even if she wasn't saying anything. She was too quiet, that was how he knew.
"I've decided that if and when you want to marry Effie… You have my permission." His golden eyes went wide. Looking up, he thought he was dreaming. Did he just hear what he heard? Did…did Effie's father just say he would accept him as her future husband? Rashomaru was staring dumbfounded in shock. He trusted Effie would be safe with him. And as long as she was kept out of harm's way for two more years, the danger of her spirit not being able to handle the truth would pass. They would all keep their word and ensure Effie and Genjiro would be happy. Effie's recovery was much quicker than they expected, as the sliding door slammed open and she was quick to cut Aelos short. However she still wasn't quite in top form as she was swiftly countered, thrown into his arms. He had done it on reflex as soon as he saw her flying at him. Realizing what he'd done, his face turned a bright red. His head still swimming with Aelos' cheeky warning about not having daughters and Effie's stubbornness, he finally found his tongue to say: "Thank you, I–we will do our best."
Genjiro woke up after sleeping for three days straight. It took him a few more days after that to return to his usual self, and everyone was there for him. With the truth of his younger brother's past now confronted, he would have to weather through the next two years together with Effie until she could know the truth about herself. For the time being he would hold off telling her about Genjiro.. Once the two years were behind them, he would explain it all…

Aelos listened closely to Genjiro’s story. Hearing it made him sad but he knew the story well from others too. It was a lot to think about and Aelos put his elbow on his leg so he could prop up his head. “Are you sure it won’t be too much trouble to keep Effie here with you? Having both of them sounds like a lot of work.”
However, it would appear that they were all a family together. That was a good thing and Effie had fallen in with some good people. Aelos thought hard for a few more moments. “Talking to her. It’s the best way I’ve found to actually dealing with her when she comes out. If you can get Effie more conscious it disorients Amadrya. Soo… Rashomaru would probably be your best bet. He’s good for her and Effie loves him a lot. You can tell when you spend most of your time monitoring her soul.” He gave a grin to the boy. “The necklace SHOULD hold… but she did manage to get it off but who knows what happened between her and Genjiro that triggered it. I was focusing on our link too much to completely understand how she managed to do it.”
There was a mischievous look on his face after as he tried to make things a bit better. “I’ve decided that if and when you want to marry Effie… You have my permission.” He looked a little too giddy. “I’ve been excited about saying something like that for a long time. Raising a girl is dangerous.” He laughed and looked at Rashomaru. “I have faith in you that you’ll keep Effie tame. As long as she doesn’t put herself in danger… The seal will hold. For two years you’ll have to keep the seal safe and then after that, she should be in full control.”
There was a little movement and the noise died down. The sliding door almost slammed open as Effie yawned and stretched. She looked disoriented. “Daddy…” Effie almost drop kicked him. “What trouble are you causing this time?” Aelos caught her foot and threw her into Rashomaru.
“Nothing. You should be resting… So rest.” Aelos chuckled. It didn’t look like she had heard anything. The small woman was curled up on Rashomaru now. She was dead tired and had only come out to investigate. There was grumbling from her and Aelos shook her head. “She’s so stubborn. Good luck.”

"Fate…sometimes can truly be cruel." Yukari said, breaking the silence. Hearing all of this was a terrible, tragic thing, and this was nothing new when it came to love between spirits and humans. The magic was something she sensed when Effie had come back after those long months, but she wasn't sure that that aura meant until now. Oni, as they were called by humans, had been hunted and shunned by men and gods for as long as time immemorial. A mother losing her child right before her eyes…that could break even the strongest of people. She had left the world full of hate and rage. Even reincarnation wasn't enough to remove the burden of her past life.
"We will keep our word. What you have spoken to us today will never leave this room. Now, allow us to tell you about Genjiro in return." Masashi's eyes met with his wife's, and then with his son's. Nui gave a nod to him, and the look in his eyes said he was willing to let Aelos hear about their second son.
"We took him in when Rashomaru was six years old. He was only five, and he was entrusted to me by the matriarch of the largest oni clan in Kujishoku. They found him in the wreckage of his family's home, hidden inside a cupboard. The exterior was not seriously charred despite the rest of the building having been reduced to a burnt skeleton. His mother…had just passed away." Yukari took a moment to breathe before elaborating further.
"She was killed by exorcists. From the scene, Lady Shizuka believed she had set fire to the area herself to fend them off. If they knew she wasn't alone, I have no doubt that they would have killed Genjiro too. The boy was in such a terrible state that they had to seal his memories for his own sake. But even then it didn't suppress it completely. In the first few years that he lived with us, he suffered from nightmares almost every night. I apologize for not telling you sooner, Rashomaru. I didn't want to make you feel as if we didn't love you as much as Genjiro." Masashi put his hands on her shoulders as she looked down. "Mother…it's alright. I already knew." He said. Both of his parents looked up in surprise. After a period of silence, his mother asked him in a quiet voice.
"When did you know?"
"It was a long time ago." He replied. "One night I overheard you and father speaking with someone. I don't know why I eavesdropped, but that was when I heard it. Then…I understood. Everything made sense, and I never blamed him for it." His mother's expression of relief led to her shedding a few tears.
"I'm glad…I'm so glad." His parents had been holding these worries within their heart for ten years. Returning to the matter at hand, his mother turned to Aelos.
"Is there anything we can do should Effie lose control to Amadrya again?"

What Rashomaru didn’t know was the woman who he had tackled was the very woman he wanted to save. It was hard to describe but as he went to calm Genjiro down the white flames grew even more intense. “My baby!” There was a cry as the redhead got up and attempted to pull the necklace off.
“Is dead… Just like you are.” Aelos yelled as he got closer to her. “Now, stop this.” His voice was gentle as he got down on her level. “Let her go.”
There was uncontrollable sobbing from the redhead as she screamed in pain. Binding magic from the necklace crept across her skin. The white flames faded down into the purple and finally extinguished. There laid Effie on the ground where the redhead had been before. Aelos placed his hand on her neck and felt for her heart. Good, she was still alive.
He pulled his arms around her and lifted her up. She was so light but she had always been compared to the tall demon. He cradled her in his arms like she was a baby. “I promised you an explanation. Let’s get these two back to the house.”
Once they got Genjiro and Effie settled into another room to sleep, Aelos was seated on the other side of the table compared to Masashi, Yukari, Rashomaru, and even Nui. “You must have realized by now that the necklace has binding magic on it.” If Rashomaru didn’t notice he doubted it got past Yukari. “Three thousand years ago I was married to a woman named Amadrya. She was strong and resilient. A human just like Effie, well sort of. Before we were married the sundering happened where Verya fell. The god that her clan worshiped became corrupted and asked for all of her apostles to be killed or worse.”
He took a deep breath. “Apostles of her god were virgins… and they soiled them before they killed them. As they came for her, I came to her and made a contract with her for her soul. That’s what we do after all. We get energy from contracts and we harvest them for energy after we complete their task. I fell in love with my contract and I married her letting my blood soak with hers. I made her a demon-touched. We were married for a few hundred before she became pregnant with our first child. It had been a long hard road to even get that far.” He held a frown. “However, there were a few who weren’t happy it happened. They killed her and our child who was still in the womb.”
He had a hard time sucking up the tears but he shook them off. “Seventeen years ago I felt her enter the world again… Or at least my seal. I was concerned someone had forged my demon contract so I investigated. I found a couple throwing their newborn into the river. It was Effie. She had the very same seal that Amadrya had before her. Naturally, I assumed that it was reincarnation… but I never dreamed it was something more.”
He took a drink of tea before closing his eyes. “I raised her away from everyone near Iria. In a safe place, it was just the two of us. I taught her to survive so that one day I could let her leave and she would be safe. However, on the day she reached womanhood… Something woke up and started a massive fire. I knew the fire well enough. I thought maybe her powers had just finally woke up. Amadrya made her first appearance that night and she was angry. She remembered her death and she had felt our child die before her. She wanted blood but the people who did it have been dead for a very long time. She had no idea the amount of time that had passed. I managed to subdue her and put a magical lock on her. The only time she can come out is if Effie is in mortal danger but the seal had been cracking. Scared for you all I asked her to leave to fetch the amulet. It was the very first gift I gave Amadrya as we courted. I figured if anything could bind her it would be that. I was right but she was smarter… She had managed to throw it off to trigger the transformation during the confrontation with Genjiro. I will work on a solution to calm her down. I think if we can calm her down that Amadrya won’t hurt anyone… She is a mother who has lost the most important part of her. However, if Amadrya comes back I will lose the most important part of me again. As cruel as it is… It is Effie’s time now.”
He set his cup down. “Which leads to this request. Do not speak a word about what you saw today to Effie. Until the day she reaches full maturity she must never know because it could break her spirit. If that were to happen she will die as the primary host. Her spiritual power is much stronger than Amadrya’s to compensate for Amadrya being there. She will reach full maturity in two years on the demon holiday of harvest… I will explain everything then.”
It felt like a weight lifted off of him but he looked at the small family. “Any questions?”

He saw it in a dream. It was a place he had never seen before, but it felt so familiar. It was a small house in the forest surrounded by blood-red maples. There was no path leading to the door, a boundary of large smoothed boulders dotted what was 'edge' of the yard. Sometimes that house would appear in his thoughts and he would feel himself moving as if he was going somewhere else. He didn't know where it was, but somehow he kept feeling compelled to go. When he was just about to leave the trees and go to the stone border–he would wake up. …And he didn't know why.
That night he had actually left the house, unwittingly retracing steps buried deep within his mind. Like a man possessed he walked, and walked, and walked until he somehow found the same house in the clearing, but with no sign of maple trees anywhere. He snapped out of his daze, and found himself standing in the middle of an overgrown field with the crumbling remains of a building–its wood charred black. Images started flashing before his eyes.
The interior of the house. The blurred visage of a woman's face. The memory of two doors closing shut leaving just a crack.
A reddish light shining in from outside.
Fire.
Fire spreading, consuming everything. The entire house, engulfed in flames.
It all came flooding back.
He fell to his knees, the image of the burning house that once was flickering over the skeletal structure. Grabbing his head his entire body began to shake as he heaved uncontrollable sobs. There was a voice of a woman sobbing in his mind and shouts of other people screaming at her.
His mother.
She was his mother. He remembered.
"Genjiro, hide here ok? Wait here for mama, and don't open the doors. Mama is going to be back soon, and everything will be alright. I love you…my son."
Letting out a wail, the entire field erupted into flames, burning a bright crimson red. With tears streaming down his face he set the place ablaze as his hellfire went out of control. Genjiro broke down sobbing, curled up into a crumpled heap on the ground as all the memories that had been sealed returned. He was five again, scared and alone. People in strange robes with staves and symbols were trying to kill them and his mother hid him inside a cupboard telling him to wait for her. He heard her screams, and then everything was on fire. Even though he didn't see everything, deep down he knew mama wasn't coming back.
He didn't even recognize Effie when she charged through the flames. In a blind panic he charged at her, desperately trying to protect himself from what he saw as the people who killed his mother. She was flung far out of his sight, but that was just the beginning of the danger.
Rashomaru wasn't able to tell Effie to wait for him, she was already there when he arrived on the scene. But instead of seeing Effie anywhere, there was enchanted fire overtaking the entire area. He barely dodged being hit by a flying sword, only for it to transform into Effie's father. The white flames were unearthly and terrifying, even more chilling than seeing normal fire unchecked. Aelos quickly explained to him and gave him the necklace Effie had worn when she came back from her months of training. He told Rashomaru it was vital that he put it on her as soon as possible–and if he saw a red-haired woman, to do just that while staying alive. When the white fire parted, he jumped through the opening and began to search for either of the women. His blood ran cold as he saw the latter, grabbing his brother's throat while Genjiro tried to break free. Aelos used himself to get the woman's attention and Rashomaru quickly ran around. He desperately wanted to run and check if Genjiro was hurt, but if he didn't make the woman wear the necklace the entire town would be consumed.
"Ancestors, grant me your strength. I pray for your wisdom and power, Lord Arahabaki. Please grant me the swiftness and courage for what I must do!" He whispered hoarsely, fighting back tears and feeling his throat tighten. Channeling the power of his inhuman blood he threw his odachi aside and went into a full sprint. His weapon would only slow him down and he had no time to waste. Tackling the woman from behind, he quickly fastened the necklace onto her as she reacted, sending him hurtling across the burning field. His entire body ached, even with his mother's bloodline the blow he took was painful. Pushing himself up, he forced himself to run towards Genjiro. The only way he was able to find him was because he was in the one spot where the crimson flames were the strongest. Throwing himself onto his brother, he held on tight as his entire body was enveloped in searing pain.
"Genjiro! Genjiro, I'm here! Your brother is here!" A voice was breaking through the cacophony of the nightmare. Genjiro thrashed as something was holding him down, but the voice kept talking.
"It's ok, you're safe. Everything is going to be ok. Your brother Rashomaru is here, and I'll be here to protect you no matter what…" Hot tears rolled down his face as he finally stopped struggling and he collapsed, crying himself to sleep. The crimson flames were extinguished and completely died out. The ground was completely scorched and blackened, but it was over. Now all that was left was for Effie to return too.

“Demon fire,” Effie said it without even hesitating. She knew it well enough thanks to her own flames. You would need to knock the source out.
Once Nui told her Effie was in a dead sprint. It didn’t matter who or what it was. She was hopping and jumping high with incredible speed that wouldn’t have been present before that moment. She was a capable fighter who took on a whole demon clan by herself. She wanted to protect her whole family, her new family.
The distance between her and everyone else was great at that point. She was barefoot, barely dressed, and running headfirst into the fire. What she saw made her stop dead and almost fall on her feet. “Genjiro.” He was out of control and he certainly was not himself.
“Effie, you need to knock him out before this gets any worse.”
“…Yes.” She cut her palm and conjured up the sword. Swing for swing with it intensifying on each side. Now the forest was showing two completely different types of flame. One was circling the outside with a hue that could only mean Effie was doing it. It was keeping the other fire in check as not to reach the village.
However, with her focusing on the defense her offense was starting to become sloppy. She took an attack head-on. The purple-hued flames burnt hotter and brighter turning to a blood-red before settling on the hottest of flames: white.
The sword that contained Aelos flew through the fly and hurdled towards Rashomaru once they showed up. The demon transformed back into his original form and laid sprawled out on the ground. The white fire looked more of a monster than the one it was trying to contain. “This is bad… Really, really bad.”
Not one but two had now lost control within the flames. Aelos looked up at Rashomaru. “I will explain everything to everyone but not to those two… What you are going to see might shock you a bit.” He got up and curved the white flames just enough to get Rashomaru and the others in to help. “Before we go… I want to give you this… Get it on her as soon as you can.” It was the amulet that Effie had retrieved just months prior. He tucked it into Rashomaru’s hands.
There in the center stood a taller red-haired woman who had Genjiro by the neck. He was still fighting her since she couldn’t get him off the ground. “Amadrya,” Aelos yelled. “You need to let Effie go.”
“No,” there was a cry from the woman as flames whipped back at them. Genjiro was thrown at a tree and Amadrya began to advance. “I want to live.”
Aelos put his hands up. “You had your time. It is Effie’s now. I hurt as much as you but you need to let her go.” He looked to Rashomaru.
“They stole everything from me!” There were sad tears and the screams were of a tormented soul. It made Aelos flinch.
“They stole everything from me too! But you are no better now that you are stealing everything from Effie. Listen to me.” Aelos was yelling but it was only pissing the woman off more.

It started after they had set down some ground rules for Genjiro so he wouldn't stress out Effie. They made sure to reassure him that they still loved him, just that Effie wasn't comfortable with a few things he did. Genjiro understood, and he did his best to not disturb them again. Rashomaru was happy that his little brother was able to progress, even if it was a tad late. He was very accepting towards people, one of his best traits. He was frank and wholehearted with other people, but only Rashomaru and his family knew the real reason why… What had happened ten years ago had slipped the members of the Kaname household's minds until Genjiro began acting strangely. Rashomaru didn't notice it until Effie told him. Now that his brother was sleeping in a different room he didn't think much when he heard the door across the hall open and close in the middle of the night. He saw Genjiro's silhouette pass by their room before he drifted off to sleep.
The next morning he found Genjiro's room was slightly ajar, and his bed was unmade. Normally this didn't seem off for his carefree personality, but the way the blankets were seemed as if they had been undisturbed since he left them. If he had gone to use the toilet, the blankets would be more twisted as he rolled to settle himself back in. The blankets were like he had gotten up and didn't come back to sleep in them. Genjiro almost never woke up earlier than he did.
During the day Genjiro seemed like his usual self, though tired and sometimes sleepy. He would doze off in the middle of the day, and in the following weeks he would stare at a faraway point in a daze. When this happened, Rashomaru would call his name and he would snap out of it, but this was happening more frequently. One night Genjiro left the house and didn't close his bedroom door. Rashomaru got up a few minutes after hearing the slide of the door, and went to see how he was doing. When he saw the door wasn't even closed–that was when he felt an uneasiness in the pit of his stomach.
He went to the bathroom with a lamp in hand, but it was empty. Next he went to the kitchen, still nothing. He then began to check every room in the house and realized he couldn't find Genjiro, and ran to wake up Effie and his parents. "Where's Genjiro? Did you hear him pass by a few minutes ago? I can't find him–he's not in the house!" Then his mother rushed past him and went to the front door, letting out a cry.
"His sandals are gone!" Fear flashed in his father's eyes as he grabbed his sword and lit a lantern, changing his clothes. It didn't take much for everyone to realize something terrible had happened.
"Open up! Open up!! It's an emergency!" Nui's panicked voice came from the other side of the front door making everyone jump. Letting her in she was practically breathless, as if she had ran a long way to get here.
"FIRE!! There's a fire in the forest! I don't know how it started, but I tried to bring water in buckets but it wasn't going out!" Yukari's face paled, but she regained her composure.
"Nui, I need you to tell Effie and Rashomaru where the fire is. Masashi, go with Nui and call the head priest from the monastery! I will rejoin you shortly, but first I need to find something. If my suspicions are correct then…" She didn't finish that sentence, but they parted towards their respective directions. When Rashomaru arrived to where Nui had discovered the fire, that portion of the forest was already engulfed in crimson red flames.

It was still Effie’s first few encounters with boys. Rashomaru was different since she was comfortable with him but with Genjiro she had never actually had any siblings. She hadn’t had anyone. It had only been herself. She was highly self conscious of herself still.
Effie watched the fight between the boys and she pulled the blanket closely. Listening to Yukari interrogate Genjiro made her feel awful but it had to be done. At least she would feel a lot better if he knocked.
“It’s okay Genjiro…” Effie stepped forward and hugged the boy. “I just get spooked easily. I appreciate you understanding.” Even if… He didn’t completely know her story. Rashomaru understood and maybe eventually she would fell alright telling everyone why she was so skittish.
After that day though… Genjiro started to act a little weird. Effie was concerned about him and now he was even sleepwalking. She would get up in the middle of the night just to check on him. This would continue for as long as it took… Until the night the accident happened.

This wasn't the first time Genjiro had 'accidentally' walked into the bath when it was occupied. It happened before when Nui slept over at their house, with that being the first time he had sen Nui in her less human form. She scolded him, he apologized, and he made sure not to do that again. But with Nui out for the day and Effie having just moved in, Genjiro likely forgot. Things were different this time though–Nui and his younger brother had grown up together. Effie was still like a guest, and to a girl this would be a terrible shock. Genjiro managed to get a running start, but Rashomaru wasn't going to let him go. His brother might be faster than him, however he knew it would only be a matter of time before he caught up. He couldn't keep running forever.
Despite that, Genjiro managed to run him all around town through every place imaginable. They went through the market, over bridges and down country roads, even skirting the edge of the forest. No matter how fast Genjiro ran Rashomaru was several steps behind, still keeping up. A few hours later, Yukari had calmed down Effie when there was a slam coming from the direction of the front door. They hadn't come into the house, rather it was Rashomaru dragging Genjiro by the back of his clothes before pinning him against the wall. There were clear marks in the dirt where Genjiro's sandals had gone through and the older brother was glowering down at his cheeky younger sibling. Genjiro was clearly out of breath, but not an ounce less mischievous.
Their parents were outside, seeing the spectacle.
"I didn't know it was occupied–I'm serious!" Genjiro had his hands up as if trying to appease the six foot four man glaring daggers from golden yellow eyes. "Then why did you run?!" Genjiro's eyes shifted to the side.
"…'Cause I wanted you to chase me. Kinda like how we used to play tag with Nui, back when we were little~" Genjiro let out a yelp as he was thrown onto the ground, the two boys wrestling in the dirt. The former was doing his best to cover his head while cracking a grin, fending off Rashomaru's blows.
"Owowowowow!" Yukari waited for a few minutes until she went to pull them apart, and made them rejoin everybody to hear Genjiro's side.
"Genjiro, answer me honestly. Did you know Effie was in the bath?" "No…" She asked the next question.
"Did you see her slippers or see any other signs that the bath wasn't empty?" He lowered his head slightly.
"…No." Their father stared intensely as his wife did a thorough interrogation, adding to the atmosphere with his presence. Rashomaru's head cooled as he listened; he knew Genjiro didn't meant to walk in intentionally but it was a bad habit that had to go.
"Next time, even if we don't have any guests in the house–remember to knock and ask loudly if anyone is in before opening the door. Hm?"
"Ok…" Yukari ruffled his hair, and he smiled a bit. He wasn't a bad child, just free-spirited much like her siblings and relatives tended to be.
"…I'm sorry for walking in without knocking, Effie."

Effie felt really bad for Genjiro but it took everything for her to sleep. She remained resilient in her protects against him. She had let Rashomaru know the whys so that he didn’t think her heartless. There was also the fact that Genjiro was naturally hot and it was almost killing her whenever he got into the blankets with her.
She was thinking about it more while she was in the tub. It felt good with the oils and the scents. Then she heard the door slide. At first, she thought it was Rashomaru checking in on her but then her eyes met not Rashomaru’s eyes. She grabbed her chest and threw herself into the water letting out a shriek that was probably heard halfway across town.
Out ran Genjiro just as Rashomaru ran in. She flailed in the water. “THAT WAY HE WENT THAT WAY!” She yelled and pointed as she flopped out of the tub and into a towel. She was dressed and running out of the room and she stopped at the entrance of the house when she realized… They were just gone.
She was sopping wet and so were her clothes from her not drying properly. The demon-touched girl was shivering when Yukari finally came home had a look of concern. “Effie, why are you standing out drenched like that?”
There was a vivid blush across her face as she saw Rashomaru’s father get closer. “I was taking a bath and Genjiro just walked in! They took off! Rashomaru is chasing him but I don’t know where they went.” Yukari put a blanket around Effie and they waited for what was literally hours before they saw the boys making their round back.

After a very one-sided scuffle, Genjiro was giving it his all trying to get back to his spot on the futon. Unfortunately his aimed throw was deflected and it went sailing…straight into Nui's face. He didn't even know where it landed until something jumped him and he couldn't see a thing. Mom and dad came hearing the noise and he was given a stern talking to. He was a bit disappointed, but he was feeling sheepish. Old habits were hard to break as moving himself to another room was hard. He was used to that room, even if it wasn't as roomy when they were kids. He had a lot of memories there and sometimes he still snuck in when he thought they were all fast asleep. As tough as it was for Effie and his brother, it was tough for him too. He wouldn't have felt as bad if he was allowed back in the room again, and Nui tried her hardest to help him by being a 'substitute hugging pillow'. But it wasn't the same. In the morning his brother would comfort him in private so he knew he wasn't angry at him. He really liked Effie too, but he was so used to being right next to Rashomaru.
Nui was out running errands for Gramps again and his brother was busy so he was by himself. There wasn't much to do, since he wasn't good at cooking like his big bro. The house was always clean, the laundry was drying outside, and it was too quiet. Not sleeping well for a while had him feeling down lately, even if he was good at hiding it. "I guess I'll have to get used to sleeping by myself." He said with a sigh. Rummaging through his closet, he took out a towel. Whenever you felt tired, there was nothing better than a nice bath to make it all melt away. The warm water was comfy, and he liked that feeling. Without giving it a second thought he slid open the door to the bath whistling, towel tucked under his other arm. He didn't even see it was occupied until he heard
the scream–then he knew he really was in big trouble now. Abandoning his towel, he made himself scarce before he could be caught and booked it!
Mere seconds after Genjiro had made his narrow escape, Rashomaru came in on full alert–catching a fleeting glimpse of black hair tips vanishing out of sight. The next sound made Genjiro hold his breath and pump his arms and legs faster.
"GENJIRO!!!!" This was bad–that was his brother yelling and he knew that tone of voice meant he'd better get ready for the chase of a lifetime.

“I
was comfy!” Effie was able to retort. She was fully ready to fight for what was hers. She watched as Genjiro moved and she was quicker as she dove into the futon right onto Rashomaru. There was a low growl that left her lips mainly because now she was cranky.
She proceeded to take her pillow and beat Genjiro with it. He threw his pillow and Effie managed to flip over the pillow as it was thrown. She was oddly graceful in her sleepy state. “That’s what you get!” Effie pointed at Genjiro who now had an angry Nui on his face. She looked at Rashomaru and pouted. “Genji pushed me out of bed!”
This would be enough for his parents as she crossed her arms. She would fight him for it and while she didn’t look like it… Effie had received a lot of one on one training.
The next few weeks were just as bad… Genjiro had managed to sneak into their futon on more than one occasion. Rashomaru and Effie had begun to discuss what they could do. He was a clinger and sometimes he clung onto Effie.
The sleep deprivation was beginning to show especially in her morning training with her father. Their hand to hand combat was often equally matched until the day that Effie got launched into the house wall. “You aren’t sleeping?” Her father recognized it easily.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” She knew that Rashomaru was watching. He was fascinated by the fighting style that Aelos had. She came back easily and managed to pin her father to the earth. They had decided to start setting him up on dates with girls around the village… It wasn’t going well for them.
“I’m going to go take a bath.” Effie declared it out loud before she stomped off towards the bath. She needed to calm down. She sunk down into the hot water and relaxed.
Aelos sighed a bit and looked towards Rashomaru. “…Girls… Don’t ever have girls.”

Effie's natural instinct sent Genjiro flying, landing and rolling on the floor with a
whump. He began to groan in a complaining pitch as he got up and found he was no longer in his comfy place.
"Mmmm….I was getting comfy." He sleepily rubbed his eyes, clothes rumpled and blanket now sliding down the corner of the room. This wouldn't be out of the ordinary if this wasn't a fifteen-year-old being tossed out of bed. That toss wasn't enough to deter him from attempting to reclaim his spot on the larger futon, intending to get back in before his spot went cold. Unfortunately Effie wasn't so keen on relinquishing her 'comfy spot' either, and things began to get heated in a non-malicious way. Rashomaru wrinkled his face as he was rudely awoken by things being thrown and shouting. Then there was an animal-like yelp as something was hit and somebody came crashing down.
Sitting up and yawning, he was greeted by the scene of bedding all over the place with Effie wielding a pillow in hand and Genjiro on the ground with a white blur attacking his face. An abandoned pillow was on the ground next to his younger brother, and he was just trying to figure out what was going on. "What…what happened?!" Squinting his eyes as he lit a lamp he stared at the white pile of fur. Was that Nui?
"Mmgh! MMGHH MGH!!!" Genjiro was desperately trying to pry her fox form off, a form she rarely used unless she was extremely agitated. The ruckus had woken up his parents too, as they opened the sliding door with a lantern in hand.
It was still pitch black outside. Taking in a deep breath he rubbed his eyes and face with a sigh. It was too early for this. From what he could gather, something happened where Effie felt she had to defend herself–probably related to why his younger brother was on the floor dealing with a very angry Nui. Nui had attacked Genjiro likely due to being hit by the pillow and was annoyed she had been disturbed from her sleep. He was sure that much was Genjiro's fault, as Nui normally didn't get bothered that easily.
"Is everything alright?" His mother asked, his father behind her with his eyebrows furrowed deeply.

Effie blushed a bit and put her lips to his cheek. “You did great! It was my first time having it and I want some more. So maybe I can weasel my way into convincing you to make some?” Though she thought that it was a dirty trick giving him kisses and borderline begging. Maybe the bat of her eyelashes was going a bit too far. “Sounds like Nui though.” There was a chuckle.
Sleep finally came fast for her after several months of struggling. Rashomaru smelled good to her too as she pressed her nose closer to her boyfriend’s chest. It was like a relaxation drug to her as sleep continued well into the night.
Curiously she was pushed out of the way and she thought maybe she had snuggled to much. That was until suddenly there was hair in her face. Her nose wrinkled and she popped her eyes open disoriented. “…” This wasn’t Rashomaru’s hair. “CREEP.” She screamed as she grabbed hold of the body and tossed it with ease thanks to her demonic strength.
Effie jumped up sleepily with her pillow and waved it towards the body. She realized the mistake and put a hand to her face. “Genjiro?!” What was he doing in bed with them?!

Admittedly he felt butterflies in his stomach when she tasted the sweets he made. He had worked hard in cooking the sweet red bean paste, making the mochi, and cutting the fresh fruit. It was very different from Irian cuisine, but he wanted to show off the fresh flavors of the season. When it was time to sleep Rashomaru had gotten the futon and blankets ready earlier, laying out a separate set for his brother. Nui already helped herself to her own, now a blanket cocoon with nine tufts of fur sticking out from the backside. Effie changed her clothes and came over as he was already lying down.
"You ready for bed?" He gave a nod and she curled up beside him. "We were all a bit anxious I suppose, waiting for you to come back. Nui did very well for herself, managing to keep her excitement contained until today. When she found out I was practicing making sweets she said she wanted to be the taste tester." He chuckled, looking over at the unconscious bundle of a fox across the room. That's what happened when you ate too much, and Nui was particularly greedy when it came to dessert.
Genjiro would be sleeping a few feet away from them, which Rashomaru felt should be fine since they were still in the same room together. He didn't fuss when he came into to get ready to sleep, though Rashomaru knew he wasn't the type to be mean. The lamps were blown out and moonlight filtered in through the windows. Silence came over the room leaving only the chirping of insects. All was peaceful in the first few hours. Genjiro was fast asleep, but he began tossing and turning. Gradually he scooted towards Effie and Rashomaru's side of the room. It was only a few inches at first. He shifted positions a lot, as if he had yet to settle down into being completely comfortable.
Another few inches closer.
His blankets were twisting and his futon was now askew. Lying motionless for more than half an hour, he turned to face the other side of the room and settled in.
A few more inches closer.
Over the course of two hours he had shifted a few feet and was only half a foot away from the sleeping pair. Opening his eyes, he blinked and then got up. Leaving his futon and pillow behind he wrapped himself up in his quilt and wormed his way in between Effie and his brother. Turning his face towards his brother's side, he closed his eyes and settled in at last with a smile on his face. He was in a deep sleep almost instantly, with Effie getting a face full of his untied hair and one of his elbows. Things were suddenly very cramped and when she woke up she would see why.

“That would be wonderful…” Rashomaru always made her feel safe and it wasn’t just because he was tall. She couldn’t put her finger on why he did just that he did. Once they had settled down she nodded. “Yeah sure.” They got up and set the table for a feast that she would likely remember for a long time.
She was home where she belonged.
Effie had an appetite like always but she perked up when she heard that Rashomaru had made something. “I’ll try anything he makes.” Like the words of a love-struck child, she was ready to dive into whatever he had for her.
There was a light blush but she looked at Rashomaru and back to both his parents. They were reaching an age, she guessed, where they were more or less adults now. Plus Genjiro would be in the room with them. “I would really like that.” Especially since she didn’t want to be alone.
The first night came and she found herself having already changed into her sleeping clothes. They had gotten a divider for Effie just so she could change and she padded over to where Rashomaru’s bedding was. They had managed to make a larger bedding set for them to be in and she was putting the quilts and blankets up for ready. “I’m exhausted,” she chuckled towards him. “And I think that it is really good to be back.” Her hair was braided into two long twin tails making it so Rashomaru wouldn’t die from her hair.
It wouldn’t be more awkward than the first time they had slept together. At least he knew she was a bed hog. “You ready for bed?” She climbed in and snuggled up to him. Patiently her eyes watched and she waited. It was a safe place.

Having lived a peaceful life thanks to his parents' efforts, he wasn't sure how to comfort Effie hearing she had been fighting in those six months. Arahabaki had never been used out of its sheath since he received it, and he knew he had never been in a real fight. His father had worked hard to drill into him that a man who handled things without using his fists was far greater than one who did, and that was the standard he lived up to. The thought of losing consciousness in such a dangerous situation made him shudder. Did someone or her father protect her in those moments? Fights were one thing, but taking lives… It was something no parent would wish for their child to experience. "Everything will be alright, don't worry. I'm here." He wrapped his arms around her gently like how he did for his brother when they were children. "You can stay with us if you feel afraid. Nui won't mind. With all of us here, nothing will hurt you. Genjiro knows how to defend himself, and mother knows magic as well. Father once told me how he had to fight against overwhelming odds, though he's glad he doesn't have to anymore."
The most frightening thing must be being alone. With time, just like Genjiro, her fears would subside knowing she was in a safe place. He was going to tell her what he had held back from her before she left for her journey, but now wasn't the right time. Later, once she was feeling better. Nui poked her head out and saw them, but only grinned. It was a relief that she wasn't being as bothersome as usual, probably she ran out of energy being mischievous day in and day out. Patting Effie on the head, he looked down at her and smiled. "It looks like the food will be done soon. Nui probably wants us to help set the table, unless she has something else up her sleeve." To welcome Effie's return, they cooked a big meal–soup, seaweed and rice rolls, stewed meat, clams, fish, and seasonal fresh vegetables picked that morning filled more than a dozen plates. The table barely could hold it all. The one other time they had so much was on the first day of the year, to bless the rest of the year with good luck.
"There's sweets too, if you're still hungry. Rashomaru made some yesterday that we chilled." This would probably be the first time Effie had eaten with a big family, and everyone was eager to see how she liked the food. After the meal, Nui passed out before she could hear the call for dessert. Rashomaru asked if they could give Effie a spare room to stay for a while, explaining why. His mother had no issue with it, and his father didn't seem to mind either.
"Hm, in that case why don't you have Effie stay in your room then? Nui often sleeps over with you and there's plenty of space." "Would that be alright?" He asked hesitantly.
"If Effie doesn't mind, then I don't see why not." His mother replied.
"We have plenty of extra bedding to spare, and you can divide the room for privacy." Nui's snoring picked up as the fox was completely in a food coma, tails all over the place. Looking at Nui, Rashomaru sighed and shook his head. At this point she was basically like a sister.

Effie chuckled a bit towards her boyfriend. “You sound adorable.” She watched as Rashomaru punished Nui and she realized not much had changed on this end and that was a good thing.
Effie’s face lost its smile as she tilted her head. “I don’t know. I can’t remember and Father won’t tell me why it's so familiar to me… He just said its a long story.” Her thumb ran over the detail of the necklace. “I just know its mine but I don’t remember it.”
Once they got back to the house she chose one of the kimonos. “Ahhh I like the rich red. It goes nice against the Glaciem colors!” She didn’t know much about obis but she was glad that Yukari helped her. They got her hair trimmed up to just where Effie wanted it before she pulled the top half back and left it in a loose bun with a hairpin in it. “Thank you so much for these clothes. I wasn’t expecting this when I got back. I feel right at home.” This was her home after all.
She sat there with Rashomaru for a long time before the others left. She caught on that they were giving them some time alone so she slid over and got practically into his lap. She pulled her legs to her. “There were so many bodies Rashomaru.” Her head looked up at she could see his face. “I killed so many of them… Just to get this necklace. I know this necklace but I don’t know how but I knew it was mine the moment I saw it.”
Taking his arms she snuggled them around her. It was comforting to her as she rested her head against his chest. “I fought a demon lord. I won. I was shaking for three days before we made our way back. I was scared I wasn’t going to make it home. I kept passing out during the fights and I’m not sure how I won them… Father says I must have been filled with enough energy to continue. I’m scared of passing out again.”
She sucked in a breath. "I don't like sleeping anymore."

There was a bit of laughter when Effie mentioned that her height was the only thing that hadn't changed. Trying to console her, Rashomaru said: "It's alright, you're back safe which is enough for me." Yukari came out with a tray of tea snacks and agreed.
"Of course, we can have it shortened when we return to the house. I'll also give you a new kimono now that Nui's will be too short for you. Every now and then I trim my sons' hair as well, though not as often as I did when they were young. Did you know that Rashomaru only started tying up his hair after he was ten? He wanted to copy his father, though I had to shorten it more when people asked if we had a daughter." Nui complained that she wished she could have seen that, making Rashomaru red.
"Aww, I bet both of you were so cute as kids!" There was a cry as the older boy raised the tea snacks out of the fox's reach as she pounded her fists against him. Things calmed down a bit then Effie showed everyone the reason for her journey. In her hand was a beautiful necklace, something delicate that it looked more like it belonged to a noble. "Is it an heirloom? It's more detailed than what I've seen in the markets. There's so many perfectly shaped pearls set in the gold." Ornamentation was something he was familiar with, as he saw the ceremonial weapons his mother's kin had during the year's major festivals. Arahabaki's sheath had a bit of gold set in the lacquered wood.
His parents decided to close up shop early, setting a sign for old customers to know before they headed back home. Rashomaru was nervous as this would be the first time Effie would enter their house, and he was hoping Genjiro hadn't left things a mess. They shared a room, as his brother easily overslept. Nui and Genjiro went off to grab a watermelon, arguing whether the yellow or red ones were better while his mother went to find the kimono she had bought last snowfall for when Effie returned. His father spent a few minutes sitting with them in an awkward silence, then got up when the two younger 'children' had the melon they'd agreed on. With the same unchanging expression, the man chopped the fruit up, then plated it. Knowing his father, Rashomaru guessed he was a bit anxious on what to do. In the months while she had been away the fox and meddling brother had managed to squeeze out information on just how Rashomaru found Effie, and Rashomaru swore before his parents that he would take responsibility. It was hard to tell, but his father was quite happy.
"Ah, here we are. What colors would you prefer? I wasn't sure what you liked so I had two made. Glaciem can be quite cold here outside the city, so these are thicker garments than the lighter kimonos we wear the rest of the year." The choices had the main robe and the obi in complementing colors and different fabric patterns. There was also a brand-new pair of sandals for Ignius days. He remembered how his mother had stopped by the seamstress' shop and asked him which fabrics he thought were prettier. Had she told Effie that he was the one who picked them out? The next few hours had Nui and his mother dressing Effie up, until it was time for the evening meal. She called Nui and Genjiro to help so they could have some time alone, despite Genjiro not catching on and complaining that he wasn't good at cooking. Nui pushed him in nonetheless, winking at them before her tails disappeared beyond the door.
Now that they were alone, he had so many questions saved since she left. Shyly he turned to her and asked, "So…how did things go while you and your father were away?"

The battles were rough but she was learning more control. However, the greater access to her powers also put her at a constant strain. The six months were long. They were hard. She fought the demons either one on one or in a group. Sometimes she couldn’t remember how she finished the fights because it felt like she was sleeping. Aelos told her it was a result of her losing consciousness while fighting. She didn’t know the truth but soon she shoved her sword into the throat of a massive demon. There was a moon pendant around his neck.
”This belongs to you Effie. Wear it and it will help.”“But… I’ve never seen it before.”
”It is a very long story.”It was a gold crescent moon with pearls on the outside and diamonds lining the inside. It was gorgeous and it felt so weird in her hands. It was nostalgic. “Tell me someday?”
”I promise.”“Can I go home now?” Home… That’s what she referred to it now.
”Of course. It’s where you belong.”Effie came into town with a half cloak on. She was covered in mud from getting through the wetlands. Her brown hair had grown so much that she had it braided and pinned up. Something about coming into her powers had made… a bunch of features grew on her… BUT HER HEIGHT. She was still rather salty about it. It amused Aelos to no end.
The sword was on her side as she slid the door open. Her brown eyes looked a bit tired but she had gone all throughout the night to get to the small town. She wanted to see Rashomaru now and not later. There was a tiny squeal out of her as he pulled her up and spun her around. “Rashomaru!” She held onto him and kissed him. It felt so much like a dream.
Effie waved to everyone and took off the cloak. It was clear she had matured as she showed Nui just how much. It was a girl thing that they had after all. “When we got all my magic… I MATURED!…” Then there was a not amused look on her face. “But I didn’t get any taller. Apparently, I’m done. LOOK AT MY HAIR.” She let it out of her braid and it was down to almost her knees. “Do… Do you think you can cut it?” She looked up at Yukari. “It’s heavy now.” Not that she didn’t like it but it was a LOT of hair.
The necklace glittered about on her neck with strange magic power. “And… this is what we retrieved… He says its mine but I don’t remember it but I know it.” She showed Rashomaru now as she held it up.

Sometimes the wait is more difficult than anything else. The days seemed to crawl by, though Nui and Genjiro's constant teasing made things bearable. When snow fell and the crackle of firewood broke the still silence of the morning, he would wonder how she was doing. The bare trees grew tender leaves, the air warmed, and soon he was sweeping away fallen flowers off the path. She will be back soon, he thought to himself. Any day now. Cyril was busy with training so he and Sapphire didn't visit as often, leaving him with his thoughts during the slow hours. The days became a routine as he would begin by preparing the noodles before sunrise and open shop once it was light. Father would heat up the broth while he swept the seating area clean, Mother would greet the elderly fishermen returning from their boats. Children with their parents would come in at noon and the tables would clear out within a few hours. Then, after a short hour-long rest it was time for the evening batch of customers. They would close an hour after dark, turning over the sign outside. The dishes would be washed, dried, and stacked for another busy day.
One afternoon he was just cleaning up with the last set of lunch orders when he heard the soft ring of the door's bell signalling it was opened. "Welcome, please have a seat–" He nearly dropped the stack of bowls in his hand when he saw who it was. The bowls clattered on a table as a six-foot blur rushed over. Long arms scooped her up and spun her around as Rashomaru could hardly believe his eyes. "Effie!" Gold eyes were wide, shining and bewildered that this wasn't a dream. At the sound of the commotion, Yukari poked her head out from the kitchen to see a familiar face they hadn't seen in a while. Her husband emerged behind, placing his hands on her shoulders.
"Is that her?" The wild-haired, stern-faced man asked.
"Yes, Masashi. It feels like yesterday she was at our door when we wished her a safe trip." The woman smiled, watching the joyful reunion. News spread quickly as Nui and Genjiro arrived to join the welcoming party.

“Just stand tall and I’ll never overlook you.” She chuckled a bit towards him.
They let the soft breeze speak for them as they walked to his home. She held his hand a bit tighter and she sucked in her breath as they reached the house. “Good morning Yukari!” She wasn’t familiar at all with the formalities of things so she did what was easiest for her at the moment. Effie proceeded put her hands behind her back as Rashomaru told her about his brother. “You don’t have to be so nervous about it… if he was like Nui I would understand.” She offered a smile.
She smiled again once she seen his family coming. She eagerly bounced on the heel of her feet before receiving the charm. “Thank you so much.” She bowed lightly. Slipping it into one of her pockets she took a look at his brother. She had seen his father before at the restaurant but never Genjiro. She held her hands behind her back again as she got nervous. “Hello.” She bowed again to his father. She wasn’t scared of his father despite his appearance since Rashomaru told her he was nice.
Then Nui came out of no where and Effie turned on her heel with a shocked face. Mrs.?! Rashomaru’s Mrs.?! Her face went red and she shyly looked away. Rashomaru dealt with her swiftly. “It’s not like that… yet…” She squeaked a little as she rubbed the back of her neck. Suddenly she was up in the air as Genjiro was holding her up like a puppy. Her little heart was probably heard by everyone as she struggled.
Suddenly she burst into flames that didn’t harm Genjiro. A sparrow made of flames flew behind Rashomaru and she grabbed his back. She reformed and shyly looked around at Genjiro. “He is like Nui.” Maybe having both of them was too much. Her brown eyes slid over to Nui. She was suddenly very sad as she let go of Rashomaru.
“I’m leaving for the North today.” Her voice went from shy to more direct as she looked at her friends. “It will be long and dangerous but I will come back.” A man appeared seemingly out of no where. He was pale skinned with shaggy long blonde hair and horns. Two wings stuck out of his back. He had his hands in his pocket. Effie sucked in her breath. “It’s almost time. That’s him~”
He was so far away it was clear that he wasn’t quite ready to meet everyone just yet. Effie trembled just a bit as her fingers took Rashomaru’s hand lightly. “I’m going into a demon den. To get something that was once mine… I don’t know what it is… but he says it will help tame this power so I can use it better. That I’ve slowly losing control since I entered womanhood.” Her eyes went up to Rashomaru. “He says not to worry too much since that will only make it worse.”
When it was clear it was only getting harder for her to want to leave she let go of Rashomaru. "I need to go…"
Or I won't want to. "I'll be back in a year… Come hell or high water." Without saying much else and with it clearly hurting her by the look on her face she took off towards the man. She stopped half way before turning on her heel full tilt and practically jumping onto Rashomaru. She kissed him tenderly. "Make sure to stand really tall when I get back so I can find you okay?" She didn't wait for an answer as she sprinted back off towards Aelos.
The man transformed into the sword that they had seen her use. This time it was within an ornate sheath as she put it on her hip. She waved as she walked and then she just kept walking… All the way north.

He did his best to smile, even if he would miss her terribly.
"Will you wait for me to get back?" Her dark eyes looked up at him as she asked. Without haste or hesitation, Rashomaru gave a nod and said: "Yes, I will. I will be here, so you can find me again." Although the separation would be difficult, he would wait as long as it took for her to return safely. The walk was longer than usual. Normally they would stop at his family's restaurant than his house. It was a common practice for people to open businesses out of their own home, but they chose to have a separate location out of necessity. The faint echo of wind chimes told him they were almost there, and he held her hand as it came into view. It was a small family house, a single building with a small yard before the path led out into the main road. Large smoothed flat stones made a walkway up to the front door. His mother, Yukari, was outside hanging the bedding to dry and set her basket down as the approached.
"Welcome, Effie. What a pleasant surprise! Rashomaru, if you had told me she would be coming sooner I would have made some tea first."
She was a woman with dark hair and faint red lips. Her eyes were a faint shade of purple like wisteria, unlike the eyes of her son and husband. To most, it was easy to mistake her for a human and for his father as the oni. His father was a man of few words with an intense face, but he was an earnest man. Yukari knew how to conceal her horns well, and although Rashomaru never developed them he was unable to hide the color of his eyes. He gave a polite bow as a greeting. "Mother, Effie is planning to go on a journey. She came to tell us before leaving." Yukari smiled, then motioned for them to wait.
"I see, please wait a moment for me to call your father and brother. We will gladly send you off on your way." There was a moment of silence and tension as he stood with Effie. "I…I have a brother. His name is Genjiro. I wasn't sure when would be the best time to have you meet since Nui kept stirring things up. He's a bit of a busybody, so I didn't want him to start spreading rumors."
Footsteps drew close as three people came out: his mother, a man a few inches taller than Yukari with wild dark hair and an intense glare, and a young man about Rashomaru's age.
"Here we are, this is for you dear. Make sure to keep this on you. This is a charm especially made for travelers." The woman pressed a small cloth satchel into the girl's hand, made of a soft violet fabric. There was something inside.
"Oy oy oy, what do we have here?" The young man with loose black hair and blue eyes said, leaning out from behind their mother. "Genjiro…this is Effie. She was living with Nui for the past few months. She's going to be leaving for a while, so let's give her a proper send-off." Rashomaru was quick to interrupt before he could say anything, trying to control how much he would start fantasizing. The stern-faced man said nothing while he folded his arms, watching them all. "Father, this is a new friend who came to stay a few months ago. You've likely seen her a few times already in the past weeks during midday." The man nodded with a grunt, his brow furrowing more. Not exactly the best first impression, but this was his family.
Then, Nui emerged from nowhere. Pretending like she had just met Effie for the first time, she waved with a fox's grin.
"Hiiii Effie! Or should I say, 'Mrs. Nekoma–" A large hand clamped over her mouth as Rashomaru flicked her forehead with the other.
"OOWWW!" That little fox–she just let it slip, right in front of his brother no less! Already he knew there was no taking back what had happened as everyone heard it.
"She's so cute! Hey bro, where'd you find her?" Whirling around, he was prepared to deny his brother's wild accusations when he saw Genjiro hoisting Effie up in the air! "Genjiro! Stop that! Put her down!"

Effie spent long months learning how to speak and communicate with everyone. There were many times that she got ink everywhere on her when learning calligraphy and this entertained Nui to no end. She took his hands in hers after the kiss and looked sad for a moment. “Somewhere far.” She couldn’t tell him just yet. She was worried at the very most he would try to come with her. “I’ll tell you when I get back.” She put her forehead to his just so they could talk on even ground. “I’ll be fine. I’m almost always fine.” She offered a shaky smile. “If I’m not… You can heal me right? I’ll make it back and you can heal me again.” She put her fingers in-between his and webbed them together. “I wouldn’t tell anyone other than you first.” It was a tiny bit of a whisper as her brown eyes fluttered up to him once more. “You know I will say my byes for now to them. I would never disappear on them like that.”
There was a smile on her face as she nodded. “Okay, I’ll let your mother make me a charm.” They had been rather intimate in the last few months. Nothing overly extreme but enough that it gained Nui’s attention. “You can’t let Nui tease you too hard while I’m gone. You know she’s going to try.” She giggled a bit. “But… most importantly… Will you wait for me to get back?” They were young and she understood if someone else came along. She kissed his forehead and held his hand as they did what felt like the long walk back to his parent’s… She figured they could tell Nui last.

He wasn't sure what was more shocking–the sheer number of siblings Sapphire had or that this woman with immense power was her mother. Cyril didn't seem surprised which meant he was aware of both, but it was still difficult for a boy used to a small, tight-knit family to grasp. He had many cousins and family members on his mother's side, but here it was just his parents and his brother. When Sapphire's mother caught one of her younger sisters, the words exchanged brought back fond memories of his mother chastising Genjiro. When he was old enough, he took over keeping the younger boy out of trouble for their mother.
With the worst finally over, he and Nui began to teach Effie how to read, speak, and write Ataiyan. Nui eagerly showed off her calligraphy skills, while he taught her conversational phrasing. Effie was a fast learner, and soon his mother offered to each her more during the slower hours at the restaurant. Months passed and the rainy season had come and gone when she surprised him. There was a serious look in Effie's eyes when she threw her arms around him and pulled him down into a kiss. Expecting something else entirely, Rashomaru was thrown off guard. Even though it wasn't his first, it was still a surprise every time. "You're leaving? Where are you going?" He asked. From what she was saying, she was referring to her adoptive father. "Will you be alright?" As accepting as their little town was, he knew the outside world was not always the same. "Have you told Nui? My parents would also like to send you off as well."
He then realized she hadn't met his brother yet, though he had been trying to keep them from meeting for a while. Eventually it would have to happen, but there was still that hesitation. Normally he said very little about Genjiro to others, even Nui. Subconsciously he would choose his words to avoid being asked. As he and Effie grew closer he felt he needed to be open with her just as she had been with him. She had told him about her past and her stigma, something that wasn't easy for anyone in her position. But the timing didn't feel right, and he didn't want to dampen her spirits right before she was preparing to set out into the world again. "Mother might give you a protective charm to keep. When I went to train with the priests, she gave me one."

Effie could hear Rashomaru’s call to her but she had lost so much blood and energy again. She shouldn’t have summoned Aelos. She knew right then it wasn’t him who needed the rest but her. Her body was far too young to control the mass output of strength the demon had and he had been trying to protect her by lying. The goddess quickly healed everyone who deserved it and Sapphire felt relief watching Effie become lively again.
Effie and Sapphire took Nui’s hug as gracefully as they could. “It’s okay Nui. You did good getting the priests.” Effie patted Nui’s head and hugged her tightly. The sword disappeared that she had as she embraced the girls tightly to her.
Angela looked over Rashomaru. “It’s not an issue. Sapphire is among my youngest in my brood. I would be a poor mother if I allowed even one of my children to suffer… Or her friends.” In this instance, another smaller girl phased in. She had scruffy black hair and grey eyes. She was yelling at up at her mother. There was a dumpling in her hand. “MYRRA I TOLD YOU NO STEALING.” Angela grabbed her by her free hand. “Where did you get this.”
“Town,” the little girl spoke so innocently.
“…How did you pay for it?” Angela narrowed her eyes. “Monkey does as it sees.” She dragged the younger child behind her and Sapphire snorted with a laugh. “We will be having a long talk with your father when we get home.”
“But Mooommmm I’m good at it,” the girl flailed a bit but the goddess just lifted her up with ease.
“And I am good at a great number of terrible things… Should I be doing them?”
“No,” the girl squeaked.
“We will be repaying whoever she took this dumpling from… In the mean time, thank you for taking care of my daughter.” She bowed to the boys and slapped the back of Myrra’s head until she bowed too. She took a bite of the dumpling when her mother wasn’t looking. “YOU LITTLE,” She grabbed Myrra by her scruff and carried her into town. “Of all the things that Adraejen could have taught you.” There was ungodly screaming as Myrra tried to get away Angela. “Oh no you don’t.”
Sapphire palmed her forehead and stood up. “I’m so… SO sorry. My mother is going to handle the little terror… She is one of my youngest siblings. She is highly gifted in magic. She’s tormented Cyril before… and his brother.”
Effie chuckled a little bit. “How many siblings do you have.”
“Over one hundred,” as soon as it left her mouth Effie’s about hit the ground.
“HOW OLD IS YOUR MOTHER?!”
“Over fifteen hundred I think.” Sapphire thought about it. “She’s really important on the other continent. Almost all of us have different fathers but the youngest five.” She was counting them all on her fingers. “Rohan, Poppy, Lark, Myrra, and Wisteria. Yes, five. Wis is only a few months old now!”
Effie was still so flabbergasted. She didn’t understand or want to understand how someone could remember so many names.
The months went by after that and Effie was well into learning how to speak Ayaitian and she could write a bit of it too now. It was one morning that she was acting rather weird. “Rashomaru.” She almost cornered him. She was so small compared to him but her eyes were serious. “I have to leave for a while. I need to go get something for my father.” She reached up and grabbed onto him so she could pull him down to her level. There she kissed him gently. "I'll be back… I don't know when though. He says it will be long."

"EFFIE!" All the fire in his body cooled the moment he saw her fall. While the boys and Nui were checking on Sapphire and Effie, the priests rounded up the hunters. Rashomaru then felt an immense amount of power in the air, something that shook him to his core. He had no idea what was going on when Sapphire called out, and his skin broke out in goosebumps when a woman manifested before them. Everything he felt before was washed away by a stunned silence as he beheld her in awe. What amazed him too was that he could understand her words, despite her clearly not being from Ataiyo. The silver-haired boy's face was relieved when this fiery-haired saint began to draw forth power from the land itself, washing over them. The cuts Sapphire and Effie had healed faster than what he or his friend could do, it was almost instantaneous. The color came back into Effie's face and Nui looked like she was going to cry. Unable to hold back anymore, the fox threw herself onto the other girls in a hug.
"I'm sorry!! I'm so, so sorry…" Sniffling she kept apologizing and apologizing for running, even if she had managed to bring the monastery's priests just in time.
While they had their heartfelt reunion, Cyril nodded with a smile when the healer asked him to chide his mother on not getting injured. Rashomaru bowed low to the woman, a noticeable display of gratitude and humility for someone with his frame. "Thank you, thank you so much." The head priest watched on and gave a nod to the goddess in thanks. Then, he spoke to the hunters who were now restrained.
"Whatever your reasons may be, my brothers and I will see to it that you are reported to the local authorities. We are no stranger to the dangers of the spirit world, however an attempt at murder of a young girl is unforgivable. You have not only shamed yourselves, but all practitioners of your art. I hope you will seriously reflect on your conduct." As an additional precaution, the hunters were placed under a Vow of Silence to neutralize those capable of using verbal casting. Insults to the priests were useless as they were taken away.

“Cyril,” Sapphire whimpered just loud enough. She knew he would protect her like he had promised her so long ago.
Before long they watched as the boys systematically destroyed the men around them. Sapphire was able to finally move from her paralyzed state. She was almost ashamed of how afraid she had been but she currently realized the situation that Effie was in.
The demon-touched girl was breathing harshly. She could tell just by the labored breaths and Effie was deeply in pain. Suddenly the hunters got forced down and Effie could relax a bit. The sword slipped out of her hand and she staggered.
“EFFIE!” Sapphire cried out as she scrambled to catch her. “This isn’t good Cyril.” She laid Effie down and looked her over. “Her wounds haven’t fully healed from the other day and she blocked them from hitting me.” There were tears in her eyes as she ran her thoughts through her head.
Finally, there was a bright look on her face. “MOTHER. MOTHER IF YOU CAN HEAR ME PLEASE!” She yelled loudly. Sapphire was sure that everyone but Cyril was looking at her weird.
That was when the magic in the area picked up. Her skinned pricked up from the energy. The winds blew just a bit different and the petals from the trees and flowers began to swarm. “I am not a summon item.” There was a stern voice as the redhead appeared. Beautiful and graceful Angela held onto an obsidian staff that was etched with gold. Her green eyes looked around and finally looked upon her daughter. “I see.”
Angela strolled through. “I’m leaving the responsible ones to you.” She was nonviolent for the most part. She bent down to Effie and Sapphire to look them over. “They are both hurt.” It was odd because as Angela spoke it was almost duel languages for everyone to hear her. It was almost clear that Angela wasn’t speaking of Sapphire and Effie but Effie and her demon. “I will now heal you all.” Green magic began to leak from the ground like rain droplets as it came up and hazed the area in a warm light.
Wounds began to close on everyone but the hunters. After a few minutes, Effie’s breaths returned to normal and she fluttered her eyes a bit. “Effie!” Sapphire hugged her and Angela moved her hand to feel the girl’s forehead.
“Who are you?” Effie was confused. There was so much magic energy that it was drowning her.
“Just a healer.” It was a lie. The magic faded and Effie found it even easier to breathe. “Cyril, your mother just fell from a ladder… Can you please tell her not to worry me so?”

"When faced with injustice and cruelty, you mustn't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by anger. Calm yourself, maintain your focus–or you may miss something important."The priest said, staff in hand. Cyril remembered how he and Rashomaru sat before their instructor while dressed in training garb, practice swords beside them. "But how will I be able to do that?" He asked, to which the priest answered: "You must practice. Time and time again, you must repeat the action. Take yourself by the hand and learn to endure. Do so decisively, and with time it will become a part of you."
The moment they found the girls, Effie and Sapphire were surrounded and Nui was nowhere to be seen. Effie was injured, holding up a sword in defense while Sapphire was on the ground. When he saw Sapphire hurt, Cyril could feel his blood rushing through his veins. His eyes widened, his expression became neutral, and his senses opened. These were no ordinary hunters; he could detect magic coming off of them from concealed objects in their possession. With lightning speed the silver-haired boy ran forward and drew the attention of the remaining men. They had their weapons ready, but he wasn't targeting them–instead he systematically disarmed them and they were a second too slow to realize Cyril's plan. One of them cried out after glancing at his empty hand.
"The amulet–it's gone! Thief!" The man roared and swung but missed as the half-fey slipped into his shadow. Reappearing behind, Cyril sent him flying with a kick and then ripped the talisman to pieces.
The sight of Effie bleeding was the spark that lit the fuse. Anger began to well up inside of Rashomaru to where it felt like his blood was burning. They dared to attack two young women when they were alone and vulnerable–Arahabaki was too good for them. When the man rolled at his feet, he grabbed him by the front of his clothes. Golden eyes glowered down at the hunter as he raised the screaming man above his head and hurled him like a stone, sailing high and far into Menomori. Terror spread through the rest as the towering Ataiyan turned his gaze to them, his massive odachi in hand. Cyril threw the rest of the holy objects over and Rashomaru brought the sheathed sword down, smashing them to splinters.
Meanwhile, Nui was running through the trees at a breakneck pace. When the hunters showed up, she took the chance to run, feeling guiltier by the minute. She didn't mean to leave Effie and Sapphire behind, but there was no way they could escape without help. The fox didn't know how close the boys were, so she went to find the head priest. For once she was glad that she wasn't human or else she wouldn't have made it. Out of breath, she staggered into the monastery and yanked open a sliding door.
"Gramps, we need help!" Through short breaths she told the head priest that demon hunters had come to the village and were going to kill the girl who was staying at her house. Though she was a troublemaker, the old priest knew the fox well enough to know she wasn't lying and arose from meditation. Taking a decorative metal ringed staff, the older man spoke quietly:
"It appears I must break my vow of peace once more." Not long after Cyril and Rashomaru's combined assault, the loud clang of a ringed staff echoed as the hunters slammed into the ground in kneeling positions by an unseen force. Surrounding the hunters were twice as many priests, with rosaries and staves in hand. Nui peered out from behind with a look of worry on her face.

“Sounds good! This will be a good chance to teach Effie the plants around here!” Sapphire was like an encyclopedia of knowledge for most things. Growing up in the huge library that she had she knew plenty of things. She had never been an outdoorsy person and was almost always found in her mother’s library. Even now she was found in the academy’s library.
Effie looked up at Rashomaru as he apologized for Nui and she chuckled. “It’s fine. I’ll try whatever you all want me to. I’m not a very picky eater.” She couldn’t afford to be with the way her energy could be. Sapphire was refined with her choices and picked very simple things. Effie had a combination of many different things. She would get excited and drop the food on her chopstick to try something else. She even got Sapphire to try a few things off her plants.
The girl’s stomach appeared to be a bottomless pit which was funny considering how small she was. It spoke a lot about the vast magic wealth she had. When it was time for them to go on their own adventure Sapphire hugged Cyril and Effie watched as she was spun around. She tilted her head as it was weird for her to see. She hadn’t spent a lot of time in any towns due to the controversy of what she was.
Once Sapphire got them to a good spot she pulled out one of the skirts of her dress and began to pick different things. She told Effie of each property the plant had. This left Effie scratching her head as she tilted it from side to side. This was a lot of information to take in and Sapphire just kept going. Finally, they had most of the stuff they needed as they went to start back.
“We found you.” How had she been so complacent that she didn’t even notice they had gotten surrounded. Effie let her teeth grind for a moment as she dodged an incoming blow but she realized a little too late that Sapphire wasn’t as well read for combat as she was. Sapphire let out a shriek as she got a cut on her face. The herbal plants they had foraged flew out onto the ground.
“Sapphire!” Effie squeaked out before dodging another. She ran for Sapphire and took a sword to her side. She could feel the warmth from her falling onto the plants below. It appeared as though Sapphire had also taken a bit of damage to her arms. “You monsters.”
The area shook with heavy magical energy as she held out her hand. “Aelos,” she spoke as she ran a sharp fingernail across her wrist. Her blood hit the ground but unlike the wounds caused by the enemy, this blood was black. The sun appeared obscured for a few moments as a sword formed in her hands. “You all will pay.”
”Effie, you have to be careful. You could pass out at any point.”“Got it.” She let the magic energy roar through her as she slashed. Black flames came up and began to attack the men. She took out a good chunk of the men before she stammered back onto her ass next to Sapphire. “Sapphire, if you can get away.” Sapphire shook her head. She couldn’t find the opening needed even if she wanted to.

"Ok, when you guys are done eating we'll clean up and meet back…at Nui's house then?" Cyril was going to say the monastery, but remembered the winding steps.
"Great! I'll go with Effie and Sapphire too. I wanna see if there are any mushrooms this time around." "Isn't it a little too early to find mushrooms after the rain?" Rashomaru asked.
"Well…maybe there's some that were on logs…that were higher up?" Nui pouted at him questioning her logic.
"If I find a big matsutake clump I'll let your dad have it to pay you back for lunch." The smell of food welcomed them before they saw the restaurant his family ran. It was a small building, with a couple of outside stools and seating indoors for a few dozen. Nui darted in to grab them a table and the back of a man in the kitchen area faced them as the person was furiously chopping something. At the sound of their chatter, a lady in Ataiyan attire came out to greet them. Her hair was black and her eyes a pale purple like wisteria. A bit of red was painted on her lips and at the corners of her eyes. At the sight of her, the tall boy bowed. "Mother, I'm back. I spent the night at Nui's yesterday. I brought a few friends over for lunch today."
"Oh that's good to hear, we were worried when you didn't return home. Welcome, please have a seat. What would you like to eat?" Nui wanted udon, with extra meat. Shiro wanted to try the soba, and Rashomaru helped the two girls pick what they liked. His mother recognized Shiro back from his training days and Nui kept Rashomaru busy with badgering him to act as translator. Slices of freshly pickled vegetables were a luxury on rainy days, as they had been lucky to have plenty before the showers started. "I apologize for Nui being so pushy. She wants you to try everything." When they finished eating, he and Shiro helped bring the bowls back while the girls went on ahead. While washing the dishes, the boys caught up with how things were since their last meeting. Naturally he asked his friend about Sapphire, and the silver-haired boy eagerly told him how they had met to her family.
It was time for them to meet back together, and the two walked down the familiar path Rashomaru knew like the back of his hand. Unfortunately they didn't reach Nui's house–as once they were close to the forest they heard screams. There were traces of smaller creatures fleeing, and the half-fey boy said he had a terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach. They both ran and Rashomaru half-hoped they would be mistaken. He hoped it had just been an animal's cry, or the distorted screech of a bird. This time they weren't so lucky.

It was so weird to feel all of the support that her new friends were giving her. Sapphire looked towards Cyril and shook her head. “No, most of the time humans get scared and bite when they think they are cornered. That’s why Sularia got attacked the way it did. Even though we didn’t have a fighting force the humans were scared. Not all humans are that way but they are skittish of those of us who are long-lived.”
Effie nodded in agreement. It seemed that humans tended to be more scared of their mortality. “That seems to be my experience with them. I’ve managed to get away from them wherever they appear but this last group was very good at tracking me.”
Sapphire noticed the shift in Cyril’s poise. She took his hand and snuggled up to him laying a soft kiss to his cheek. “It’s okay.” She whispered into his ear.
Effie blushed towards Rashomaru and nodded with a smile. She wasn't used to all the love these people were so ready to give. She hugged all over them as Sapphire joined the group hug. “Food sounds good,” Effie looked up at Rashomaru even though he was clearly annoyed at Nui. “I’m still trying to get my energy back. I don’t want to be completely useless around here. I want to be able to help where I can!” She sounded so determined.
Effie and Sapphire spoke while they traveled down the stairs. She held onto Rashomaru’s back as he carried her down just as he had done up. “We decided that it would be a good idea to also treat Effie’s wounds. After lunch, I can take her into the forest and pick the local herbs around here. Mother taught me how to make salve so I can at least be of some help to make sure Effie gets back on her feet.” Sapphire flashed a smile at Cyril.

When Effie told them the truth, instead of fear or hate–everyone present was understanding. Her relationship with her adoptive father was actually something common as far as Nui and Rashomaru knew. With Nui and Rashomaru's mother being spirits, the boy had heard of cases where children who were abandoned or in life-threatening situations were adopted by otherworldly beings. There was a female rain spirit who had spirited away a child who was being neglected when she found him crying in the rain. Unfortunately the child's birth parents suffered a fatal accident following his disappearance. Either way, it wasn't her fault for being who she was. Family was family. "I'm sure your father loves you dearly, even if he is bonded to you that way." Rashomaru said. Shiro and Nui nodded.
"That's not fair…aww, Effie." The fox went to give the girl a hug, her ears flattening and tails low.
"Don't they realize that because they act that way it makes us scared of them too?" Cyril himself felt bad hearing her answer, and understood where Nui was coming from.
"It's hard to explain, but it sort of goes both ways like Nui said. Humans are scared because of what they call 'demons' can do, but a lot of times there are exorcists who hurt innocent beings too. Most of them never think to try talking things out; they're trained for the worst-case scenario and use that method against everything." There was an unhappiness in the silver-haired boy's eyes that normally wasn't present, and it was clear it was something he had seen or known personally. Sapphire was the only one who knew the reason why. To Rashomaru, he only knew his friend as being particularly kind and tolerant towards spirits. The similarities between Effie and his brother were too strong for Rashomaru to ignore. Taking her hand, he bent himself to be closer to her level and wholeheartedly pledged: "If you ever need help, I will come. I will be at your side no matter what–I promise." These were the same words he had said many years ago as a child when Genjiro came into his family. His father and mother were loving people, and in turn they taught their son to do the same.
"We'll be here for you!" Nui said, taking Effie's other hand with a smile.
"–'Cause we're friends!" Adding onto her sentiment, Rashomaru said: "We'll be your family." The half-fey boy joined the circle, making himself a spot.
"You can count Sapphire and me too."
Feeling it was time to break the tension, Nui let go of Effie's hand to playfully push the girl into her tall friend.
"Ok enough tear-wiping! All these sad feelings are making me hungry! Let's eat! Nekomaru is going to treat us today!" He was caught off-guard and soon was fuming with anger at the fox's cheeky move. "What??! You just promised not to say anything!" Nui ran out of his reach, scampering down the steps chanting 'lunch' over and over while Rashomaru was left in a bind.
"Come on, hurry up slowpokes! Rashomaru's dad makes the best pork noodle bowls out here and it's gonna get packed at lunch hour!" She called up at them.

Sapphire clapped her hands together. “Excellent! We might be able to teach her how to read and write Ayaitian while we’re here. I think I can get leave from the academy to be able to teach someone.” It looked like Effie’s age had caused some kind of problem but it did make her chuckle towards Rashomaru. Looked like she was older from the way they were acting.
“What’s… Mochi?” Effie tilted her head towards Rashomaru. She was intrigued by foods she didn’t know and most of them she had already liked.
Then that question came and Effie backed away from the group a little. It should have been fine. She looked towards Nui and Rashomaru. She could read their auras and they were a bit like her. “Because I’m demon-touched. My life is in service to a demon until the day I die.”
Sapphire tilted her head. “But why?”
Effie rolled her shoulders and realized she hadn’t ever really talked about it to anyone. “I don’t know. According to my Father, I was born with the mark. It symbolizes what would be a ball and chain for most people. You see my adopted father is my demon master. I don’t know the circumstances of the hows or the whys but that’s why I was almost killed as an infant. Father saved me from the river they threw me into. He raised me away from demons and humans. He was afraid of the influence they could have or what they would do. When he finally let me out of where we lived he was right to worry. Most humans get prickly skinned around me almost like they can sense it… and the ones who can… They panic and hunt me down.”
Effie crossed her arms to almost hug herself. “I can fight but I get overwhelmed easily. My father is my weapon in this case. He is a demon who can transform into weapons… and any magic he can use I can use it as well. That’s why they were after me. I’m a vessel… Well sort of. Most humans who end up in my position get killed by their demons. Normally these contracts are put into place by humans who are dying and the demons pray on that… but in this case, I was born with it.”
Sapphire frowned a bit. "That sounds awful Effie… I'm so sorry."
Effie shook her head. "I left home about four months ago to try and find my place outside the safe zone that I was in. Father is trying to regain energy right now… Once he can I will be able to summon him again so I can protect myself. As it stands it will be a long while… I think he used up a lot of energy to keep me alive in the river until someone found me."

Both Rashomaru and Effie were even more self-conscious with what was happening. For sure his head was spinning. Sapphire then asked Shiro something, which he didn't catch but it seemed like he was agreeing with her.
"Sure! I'm going to be in the capital for a while. I think…" The silver-haired boy counted on his fingers looking at the sky.
"…A few years. They said training takes a while, and it might be longer depending on how well I do." Sapphire was already starting to ask Effie questions, eager to know more about her. Shiro himself was watching with a smile and Nui was now behaving. From what she said, Effie was adopted. Rashomaru wondered how her father knew where she was and her situation so quickly, as well as why she was being chased. But what interrupted that train of thought was the fact she was seventeen. Right away he could see the fur on Nui's tails puff out in his mind and those expressive ears of hers stand up straight. The fox girl had a hand over her mouth with an exaggerated gasp, and Rashomaru shot her a glaring look. "Nui…Don't you dare." He knew what she was thinking, or at least knew what she might be thinking.
"Wheeew~ I can't believe it! And an older girl too~" Nui giggled, fanning herself. "Not a word of this to anyone–
especially Genjiro."
The fox glanced sideways, tails swishing.
"Mmm I dunno…" "If you do, I'll never make you mochi ever again." The threat of losing food privileges made her do a double take and she became conflicted. Ultimately free food won out, and she grumbled while reluctantly keeping her lips sealed. Shiro hadn't gotten distracted and was the first to ask one of the more important questions.
"If it's ok for me to ask, why are the hunters after you?" Rashomaru himself wanted to ask as well, though he had felt it was too soon. He didn't think Effie had done anything that justified her being hunted down. And managing to survive the rushing currents for a few days might have been what had kept her alive. He too wanted to ask about the marking he had seen on accident when they were treating Effie's wounds last night, but would she want that information shared? Most might choose to ask about her familial circumstances, but to him, her being adopted wasn't anything unusual. He himself knew someone like that, and Nui herself had been half-raised by the priests of this monastery until she was old enough to live on her own.

Effie watched Rashomaru’s smile and got sheepish with him as well. “I’m sure if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have made it out of the river. I can’t remember how long I had been floating… A few days… maybe.” She put a hand to her head as if she had a headache. “I can’t remember but it feels like I was in the river for a long time.” No normal human could have survived all of that and even though Effie had all the traits of a human there was just something
off about her.
Though she couldn’t understand what Nui was saying she still giggled at Rashomaru pulling on her ears. She could tell that something funny was said since the girl was getting dished some punishment. It seemed to her that Nui was a troublemaker of some sort but only for fun.
Sapphire was quick on the draw to translate Cyril but stopped herself at the end and looked at him. “I don’t think they do.” However, the damage was done as Effie was blushing with Rashomaru. “I mean! IF YOU ARE! You two look rather cute together with how tall Rashomaru is!” She made sure to translate it for Effie too but it only had the demon-touched girl about ready to faint.
Effie looked up at Rashomaru for a moment. “I think it does.” If only by pure definition of it. She shyly put her hands behind her back and held them together as she bounced on her heel lightly. She didn’t want to stress out her wounds though. “How long will the spell last for?”
Sapphire mused it over. “As long as the marks stay put it should last as long as the ink stays! I know! Cyril, don’t you think we should keep coming over so we can keep Effie comfortable? At least until she can learn Ayaitian?”
Effie had a smile on her face now as she waited to hear from the other boy. That would be wonderful.
“How long do you plan on staying?” Sapphire was now curious. “You are a long way from home… Won’t your parents be upset? HOW OLD ARE YOU ANYWAYS?!” She was now in straight-up scholar mode as she looked Effie over.
“I don’t have a mother and all I have is my adopted father. He told me to stay here so I can get better and it might be better if I stay here until I know the hunters moved on. I’m seventeen as of two full moons ago.”

Rashomaru had figured as much that Shiro and Sapphire were a pair. His friend was kind, but was a bit…odd. Perhaps it was how he just was, as the older boy told him he was half-human too. Spirits' understanding of concepts such as love were different from how humans perceived it. Seeing Sapphire kiss Shiro was enough to make Nui riled up again, and they were all surprised when Effie started speaking with the orchid-haired girl. It was a good thing he had sent the letter after all. Rashomaru and Nui watched as the two girls talked, Effie finally able to speak with someone. Sapphire then explained to them in Ataiyan on how Effie managed to end up in Nisshoki. She had come a long way, all the way through the mountains that separated them from the stormy lands southward. Shiro and Rashomaru's faces were worried when Sapphire mentioned hunters, as both boys knew of such people under different circumstances. For Rashomaru, the topic hit close to home but he didn't say a word. He thought of his brother.
"Oh…so that's why you had all those nasty cuts." Nui said, her ears and tails flattening.
"I bet the heavens were watching over you, since Nekomaru found you instead!" She grinned, her cheery self again.
Then Sapphire did something incredible. With a bit of ink and magic, she painted something on him and Effie. The girl whispered to Effie, then stepped back. And to his surprise, he could understand what Effie was now saying.
“Sapphire says that you can understand me now. Thank you for pulling me out of the river.” Blinking, he then smiled bashfully. "When I saw you in the water, I was worried I that was too late. Every year we hear of people losing family members when it floods, even strong swimmers. Sometimes they get fished out by river spirits like the serpents or kappa, others are not so lucky." Looking down, he said: "I'm glad you are alright." Nui looked at them, with her ears twitching.
"Hey, hey what'd she say? You can understand each other now?" He nodded, and without skipping a beat she grinned a fox's smile.
"So is she mad that you stole her first ki–eEEYAAAAAAH!!!" Nui's question was abruptly cut short by an annoyed Rashomaru pinching the tips of her ears.
Completely missing the point, Shiro asked innocently:
"Oh you guys kiss too?" Despite the pain of her eartips, Nui was choking on her own laughter as her cheeks were puffed from her feeble attempts at containment. Right away Rashomaru's face was red and he looked away to the side. "I though she was drowning s-so… That doesn't count, does it?" Nui went into a thinly veiled coughing fit while Shiro's face had an expression of a painfully, obliviously pure happiness. The priests were enjoying the scene the young people were making and Rashomaru was attempting to deny he had done anything of the sort. There was no use hiding it now, if Shiro believed it then he'd have to face his family soon. He covered his face with his hands.

Effie was glad for all the extra food as it gave her enough energy. Effie enjoyed all the sights that they showed her and for the most part she understood what she was looking at. The city was amusing to her and she paid a lot of attention to detail. She gracefully accepted Rashomaru’s offer and held onto him as he carried her up the stairs. It was easy on her body this way. Normally she would have been able to get through the stress of the stairs but at the moment she was fine with this.
Sapphire was a curvy girl with long purple hair and eyes like literal sapphires. She was tenderly holding Cyril’s hand. She let Cyril answer first but in true Cyril fashion he was a bit lost on the whole concept that they had. “The answer is yes,” Sapphire chuckled towards Rashomaru. She kissed Cyril’s cheek and smiled back at the group.
Effie got down off of Rashomaru’s back and bowed back to Cyril and Sapphire. Once the name Iria came out Effie started to speak. “I’m from Iria!” Her words boomed for the first time in a while.
“Excellent!” Sapphire put her hands together after she let go of Cyril. She went over to Effie and they started to speak. “She is from the Iria area. She got chased up the mountains from the Thundering Plains and fell off of them from a high cliff. She was being chased by a group of hunters. They overwhelmed her. She also says thank you for taking care of her and allowing her to stay with you while she recovers.”
It was getting exhausting translating but Sapphire had an idea as she grabbed Rashomaru and Effie. “I can fix this.” She pulled out a jar of ink and a brush. With great precision she drew some special markings across both of their skin. A few magic glows later and she seemed satisfied. “It will only work for them though.” Sapphire said something to Effie and let both of them go.
For a moment Effie blushed as she looked up at Rashomaru. “Sapphire says that you can understand me now.” It was better than nothing but it was almost like her Irian translated to Rashomaru perfectly for him to understand. “Thank you for pulling me out of the river.”

Breakfast went by quickly, with how much had happened yesterday. Nui was in a good mood while stuffing her face, and Effie had a healthy appetite. To Rashomaru that was a good sign, as she needed all she could get to heal from her injuries. When she held up her bowl after calling their names, Nui was more than happy to pile more food into it. Even though Nui didn't live far from him, there must have been times where she would get lonely. They only had each other and Genjiro, while everybody else they knew either moved away or forgot. Coming out of his daze, he realized Nui's overbearing hospitality was getting out of hand. "Nui–Nui!! Stop, you're giving her too much rice! It's a mountain!" The rice was now twice the height of the bowl itself, and the fox was trying to cram more vegetables into it.
"Aww, but she's hungry…fiiine." With the sun now out, everyone was feeling better. Putting away the dishes, Nui said they should show Effie around. Getting fresh air would do her good.
However the language barrier was still a problem.
"Maybe we'll have to wait on giving her a tour." The fox mused. Effie wouldn't be able to understand the names of the places even if they wrote them down for her. "I think it'll be fine Nui. Even if she can't remember the names she'll know what the places are. I'll send a letter to someone I used to know when I did training at the monastery and see if they are in town. Shiro left a few years ago, but he's the only one who might be able to help translate." Shiro was a boy he had met in his sword training lessons. He was the first foreigner Rashomaru had ever seen and was a live-in student with the priests. He remembered asking Shiro why he came here, and the older boy said a teacher had asked the priests to take him in. At that time it didn't seem like he wanted to talk more about it, so Rashomaru didn't ask. The boy's name wasn't actually Shiro, but the name stuck when Rashomaru mispronounced what he told him. The boy also had silver-white hair, something that amazed the Ataiyan boy. He didn't know humans could have hair like that too.
It was best to introduce new places to Effie slowly, and Rashomaru stopped briefly to let his family know he had stayed over at Nui's. He didn't mention Effie just yet, still embarrassed and ruminating over how to break the news to them. Nui meanwhile brought Effie to see the places she and Rashomaru used to play at while doing the best to communicate with hand signs and pointing. Rashomaru had to deliver his letter to the monastery by himself, as Nui complained she and Effie would die if they climbed up all those stairs. It wasn't an easy climb for sure but after travelling to and from it for years he had gotten used to it. The priests greeted him and asked how his family fared, and they said they would send the letter to his friend. Delivery would take some time, so he would have to wait for an answer.
It was a long ten days until he received word that Shiro had arrived, and this time he wasn't going to let Nui squirm her way out walking up the stairs. While the fox moaned about it being a trial of hell, Rashomaru turned to Effie and tried to ask her through motions if she would like him to carry her up. Normally Nui would be the one carried, but they didn't want Effie to get hurt so the fox would have to bear the climb. The priests at the monastery had great tolerance towards spirits, and as long as they didn't cause trouble they left them be. Nui herself had been helped by the head priest there, whom she would call 'Gramps'. Finally at the top, there were two new faces for Nui and Effie to meet. Rashomaru saw Shiro standing in the gate with a girl next to him and the older boy waved enthusiastically.
"Hey Rashomaru! Wow, you're so tall now!" Shiro had left before he turned twelve, and now he towered over his friend. His friend wasn't short himself, but everyone was small next to someone that was six feet and four inches. The white-haired boy gave him a big hug, and tried to pat his head. "It's good to see you too Shiro! Is that…is the person behind you your girlfriend?" He asked shyly, remembering Effie again.
"This is Sapphire, she's a new friend I made after I finished my training here! I'm studying with another sect of priests in the capital, and she came up to visit from Iria. That's where she was studying before we met." The girl was lovely, and her hair was like the color of Terra irises. He gave a polite bow to her. It didn't take long for Nui to introduce herself, and Shiro was amazed at her number of tails. His interest made Nui pleased as she finally found somebody who appreciated them. Then he introduced Effie. "This is Effie, she's staying with Nui now. We don't know where she came from, and we don't understand what language she speaks. She doesn't understand Ataiyan either, so it's been a bit difficult for all of us."

Effie gave Rashomaru a smile when he thanked her. In the morning he let her sleep and it was a good restful sleep for her. All of her energy had been consumed by something she wasn’t even aware of. Effie had always been a hardy child so it made no sense even with her wounds that she would be as exhausted as she was. If only she knew what lurked within her. For her protection it had been kept a secret.
Once she woke up and they awkwardly had eyes meet she shied away and pulled herself up enough to wave. She couldn’t tell him good morning or she was sorry. It would have to do for now. Nui broken the silence though and Effie pushed herself up fully understanding by the smell that wafted into the room. She bowed to both of them and once more her stomach made that odd sound. She really had burnt through a lot of energy.
The small woman waited until everyone padded their way to the table before she did. She felt awkward being in someone else’s home and wasn’t yet comfortable to make herself comfortable. She sat down and stared at the food before ravaging it once more.
Her wounds were still bad but the bleeding had at least stopped thanks to Nui’s quick thinking. Her eyes looked up at both of them wishing that they could speak or have some kind of understanding. Seeing as she wanted more food and didn't want to be rude she tilted her head. "Nui. Rashomaru." She scooted her bowl up. How did one ask for food when there was no communication past names? Her big brown eyes batted a few times in confusion but at least she thought her intention was clear.

Nui knew he was skittish around bugs and rodents, so when he hit the floor he was about ready to flick her forehead twenty times only to see she had escaped. Not only that, but she had run off with the other futon and pillow. He was prepared to resign himself to sleeping on the tatami when Effie called him. She motioned, saying that she was willing to share hers with him thanks to Nui leaving him the odd one out. Giving a small bow in thanks, he took the other side and made sure to stay on his side. It was not just out of courtesy, but because he feared if he did move in his sleep she might be rolled on. On his back, looking up at the ceiling, he soon drifted off to sleep. The soft tap-tap-tap of dripping water from the roof told him the rain had stopped, and a bit of light was coming in. There was still the lingering smell of last night's porridge, and with the quilt so warm he wanted to close his eyes again. Out of habit he was preparing to shift his position when something was pressing down on his upper body. Turning his head he saw it was instead a
someone–Effie, now sprawled out over him.
He was now faced with a dilemma: he could stay still and wait until she woke up, or move now and risk having her sleep interrupted. Seeing her sleep so soundly after being so afraid the day before, it reminded him of his brother in his younger days. Although he wasn't comfortable, he chose to let her sleep. He was glad to have slept at all, with the thought of losing his first kiss to someone he had never met racing in his mind. The sound of a sliding door meant Nui was up, and she let out a big yawn as she puttered around to start the rice. The sunlight coming in through the window began to grow brighter as Rashomaru laid in place waiting for Effie to awaken. There were a few times when he thought she was about to get up, only for her to settle down in her new position. He had no idea how much time had passed until she finally opened her eyes and came to. There was an awkward silence as their eyes met, and they came to an understanding that she had unintentionally made him part of the futon. Nui broke that silence with a bleary eyed face and tousled mess of tails.
"…Hey, are you gonna stay there or are you gonna have breakfast?" She squinted at both of them, mildly amused that her bungled plan somehow managed to work.

She had never been around someone her own age and it was clear that Nui hadn’t either. So she patiently waited as Nui dressed her and undressed her. Did her hair and undid her hair. It was fine. It was sort of fun. She hadn’t had an easy life and this was light-hearted fun. At least that’s what Effie thought.
”Dad?””Hmm?””I like this…””I’m glad. Stay vigilant though. Heal. It’s okay to make friends if they are safe.””You really mean it?””Yeah, just stay safe.”The excitement poured out onto her face but she tried to make sure no one knew she was talking to someone else mentally.
Once he introduced himself she thought about it before she repeated his name, “Rashomaru.” She got it right on the first try after she furiously repeated it in her head and to her father. He helped her get it right before she told Rashomaru.
After being on the run for so long finally, her stomach let out loud noises as they sat to eat. She let the blush cover her face before she began to devour the food. Well, she did after she was shown how to eat with the chopsticks.
Effie watched the chaos after dinner unfold as she sleepily watched her two new friends argue. Was it arguing? She couldn’t tell but it had to be playing since Nui was laughing. Effie was all set up for bed when Rashomaru came tumbling out.
It took her a few moments to realize that he was without anything to sleep with. She didn’t feel it was right for her to take up the whole futon and really it was sorta big enough for both of them. “Rashomaru?” She patted the futon as she got all the way over on one side. He had saved her and she couldn’t let him stay out in the cold.
Though she really wished her father had told her how much of a bed hog she could be as she woke up literally on top of Rashomaru.

Nui took her sweet time when it came to dressing up her new friend. While Rashomaru languished on the kitchen floor, she was busy showing the foreign girl outfits and making her try out different accessories. Being an only child meant she didn't have a little sister to doll up and now she finally had the chance. Once the fox's desires were satisfied, she left her be while she went to get the cooled porridge. For the time being the kimono would do, and later the fox would see if she had any spare sandals. Rashomaru's mind was running all over the place as he was terrified of how he could explain this to his parents, as he had to take responsibility for what he had done. He had never done anything improper or caused his family problems so this was huge to him. When someone took his hands, he looked up and nearly jumped when he saw who it was. Paralyzed as the girl silently bowed, his mind was blank as she then pointed to herself.
"Effie." It took him a few moments to realize what she meant. Returning the bow, he placed a hand on his chest and told her his name, taking care to pronounce the syllables slowly. "Rashomaru." From behind, the mischievous fox popped out placing her hands on his head while leaning down.
"Nui! Ok, let's eat!"
They still didn't know how to talk to Effie, but that could wait for tomorrow. Right now they all understood that it was cold and they were hungry. The table was set and a steaming pot of rice porridge was in the middle. Everyone had a small bowl which Nui ladled the warm food into, the delicious aroma wafting up with the steam. There was cabbage, mushrooms, wild greens, carrots, egg, and bits of salt fish peppered throughout. Meat was rare unless one went to hunt or bought from the butcher, and fresh fish was out of the question while the rainy season went on. Placing her hands together, Nui said cheerfully:
"Itadakimasu!" Rashomaru did the same, and then they began to eat. There were small porcelain spoons in the shape of miniature ladles instead of the straight ones used elsewhere. These soup spoons were specially designed for porridge and gruel, as drier food was eaten with chopsticks. There were carved wooden rests for the spoons set by each bowl shaped like cats in various lazy positions, Nui's favorite set. While they ate, Nui kept making eyes at Effie and Rashomaru before chucking to herself. Things would only get even more interesting after dinner.
Although Effie didn't seem as upset as Rashomaru expected her to be, the embarrassment of what had happened up to now still ran deep. It was getting late and he was growing more nervous as Nui kept making hints about there 'not being enough futons'. Eventually the teasing became too much and he stood up, heading over to the closet where the bedding was kept to slide it open. Cramming himself inside, he shut the door as if attempting to escape the fox's badgering. This did absolutely nothing, as Nui went over to said closet and began whispering things that made the doors rattle with muffled angry sounds–leaping away just in time to avoid being smacked by a pillow flying out from the open door. Then the door slammed shut again while the fox girl was rolling on her back doubled over in laughter.
Nui went over and laid out the futons, there being specifically two. One was probably her spare, as she lived by herself. Right away her tails were swishing as she was setting up another cheeky prank unbeknownst to her hiding friend. Smiling at Effie, she motioned that one of the futons was for her as she took the other one. Waiting for the closet's occupant to quiet down, she crept over to the door and listened carefully. Putting her ear to the door, when she determined he was no longer alert she began making skittering sounds imitating a mouse. The next moment the door was flung open as a six foot four inch blur burst out, tripping on the planted pillow to fall next to Effie's futon. Nui frowned in disappointment as he missed the intended landing spot but snuck away with her bedding before he could catch her.
"Good night, sleep well you two~"

IT was thanks to being demon touched that Effie was even able to survive the wounds she had. It was why she was conscious and able to some what communicate with the other girl. She could tell they were all close in age which helped soothe her but still the tall one was a boy.
Effie’s big brown eyes watched as the boy was brought back in with a blind fold. She did a nod of appreciation towards Nui. When the blind fold started to slip Effie’s face went bright red but she was busy trying to make sure her wounds didn’t open. Luckily the fox girl was helping her out and make sure that Rashomaru couldn’t see her body any more than he already had. She looked away in embarrassment for a few moments until the healing was done.
Quietly Effie sat there and covered herself with her arms shyly. Nui came backhand helped her get clean before dressing her in an odd type of outfit. She will admit she only got into Nisshoki territory from running away. She pulled at the kimono and looked up at Nui. There wasn’t a way she could thank her right now but once she got brought the kitchen she saw the tall boy.
He had saved her. Sure he had accidentally peeked but from how he was reacting he probably didn’t mean to. Carefully Effie moved over to him and took his hands and bowed her head slightly before letting them go. She pointed at herself. “Effie.” It would have to do for now.

Nui's ears twitched as she saw the girl remove her clothes–and revealed a lot more wounds than the one on her stomach. They were terrible, it was like the one time she had seen the hunters track down a wild boar in the forest. What she and Rashomaru thought was a child was actually someone close their age despite the smaller build, and she was starting to bleed out. There was an odd mark that looked familiar, but Nui would have to ask questions later. Right now she needed help and there was only one person who could give it. Taking a deep breath in, there was no time to lose. Placing a cloth down for the young woman to sit, she made a hand motion for 'wait'. Running back into the kitchen she nearly went head-first into her tall friend.
"This is bad! You can come out now, but first you need to wear this!" Rashomaru was too worried to ask as the fox slipped on a blindfold over his head and pulled him by the arm. "What's happened? Is the girl alright?" Nui mumbled a bit before answering.
"Kind of, but not if we don't move fast. She's started bleeding and I need you to heal her, it looks pretty awful so that's why I gotta cover your eyes. I'll move your hand over the places that are hurt and just heal when I say ok, got it?"
He nodded, and was led to the girl's side. Taking a seat, Nui's hand grabbed his wrist and began moving it. When she stopped and told him to heal, he began to focus his energy into his palm. Although his mother was a spirit, he was born unable to use much magic. The most he could muster was a simple act of healing wounds, but his parents told him they were still proud of him. Unlike Genjiro who could use fire and his more rowdy cousins, all he inherited was an inhuman strength and constitution. In her haste, Nui's makeshift blindfold was starting to slip down from his face and his gold eyes saw a little bit of the back of the girl. It was then he saw the odd mark from before, and something that made him realize he had made a rather serious mistake– "Ow!" A sharp-eyed Nui caught him peeking and her hand smacked him on the face.
"No looking! Just heal!" His right side stung as he closed his eyes, making an unhappy sound.
When he was no longer needed Nui shooed him back into the kitchen where he finally had time to think about what he saw. Then…it dawned on him. The realization was too much and his face flushed with embarrassment and he wanted to crawl into a closet and hide! No wonder she screamed! And before that he…he… When Nui was done bandaging the girl up she came in to see a six foot and four inch tall person attempting to shrink into a ball. Knowing him as a childhood friend it wasn't hard for her to figure out what he was thinking, and her ears stood up as she thought of a fun little prank.
"Hey, Nekomaru. I bet she's upset cause you stole her first kiss back when you fished her out of the river." The fox teased. The next moment a high-pitched odd sound came from the embarrassed pile of a person on the floor.
"She wants you to take responsibility." With that, she skipped off to her clothes dresser while her friend started to roll on the floor.

Effie was now panting as the tree man was gone. Her eyes were wearily watching the girl but it was still clear she was in a panic. Effie watched as the girl presented herself and fanned out her tail. It soon became apparent that she wasn’t a threat. Still though, with everything that Effie had been through she knew not to trust right away. Though the young woman in her couldn’t help but take hold of the tails. It was only soon into her admiration that she realized the blood from her hands had gotten onto Nui’s fur.
Quickly she let go and put up her own hands the best she could. Realizing how wounded she was and knowing this was no time for modesty she took off the remainder of her rags. From this point it should have been rather clear that Effie was no child. Her body spoke of a someone who had just reached womanhood.
The arrow wounds were weird as they had the look of being half healed already but thanks to Effie they had been reopened. Slowly the young girl pointed out all of the arrow holes on her. She needed a healer and fast. Still the world was lurching. Blood was also going every where which didn’t help things at all. This was more important than hiding her demon mark but from the looks of those two it should be fine to show it. At least she hoped.

"Hey, I think she's waking up–" Nui said from behind him as he leaned to see how the child was doing. As soon as her eyes opened, the girl let out a rattling scream and the pillow Nui lent her smacked him in the face. In the split second before the pillow blocked his eyes Rashomaru thought he had caught a glimpse of something, but now was covering his ears as Nui was pulling him away. He was confused and didn't know what was happening, or what the child was saying. Quick on her feet, Nui was shoving him into the kitchen as the girl was panicking.
"Stay in here for a bit! I'm going to sort things out so wait until I say to come out. Sheesh you'd give anybody a shock at seeing a tree staring down at them!" The fox girl said in a half-teasing tone, joking about his height. She wasn't angry at him but keeping the girl outside calmed down was more important. She left him with the simmering porridge pot while she hurried to contain the screams. Sheepishly he peered out from behind the cloth curtain that separated the kitchen from the living quarters of the small house.
The girl tried to get up but suddenly collapsed, and Nui was right there to check on her. From where he stood, Rashomaru could see she was holding her stomach in a way that meant she was hurt. Nui's bundle of tails swished as she tried to get the child to relax, and when she threw a glance over her shoulder he pulled back into the kitchen. Pacing the floor, he could only guess what was happening.
"Um, what do I do–what do I do?" Nui muttered to herself. Now that she had a better look at the girl, it was clear she wasn't from around here. Her hair was black but her features definitely weren't Ataiyan. Did this girl get lost in Menomori and then injured? Racking her brain for ideas, her ears pricked up. Even if they didn't understand each other's words, people would always react the same way when they saw something comforting. Standing up and holding her hands up to show they were empty, Nui fanned out all her nine tails with maximum fluffiness.
"Look! They're fluffy! Looook~"
The fox girl wiggled her hips and tails, her ears facing forward. She even held them close to the girl in hopes of distracting her long enough to inspect her stomach wound. Foxes have a keen sense of smell after all, and she could smell the fresh blood. Either way it was a fifty-fifty chance that the girl would calm down or faint. Hopefully it would be the former than the latter… Once she gained the girl's trust, Nui would try to see how serious her injuries were and start treating them. She'd have to convince the girl to get into a new change of clothes too, as what she was wearing was stained and torn up beyond repair.

“She’s a demon. TAKE A LOOK AT THAT MARK.” The man scolded his wife who was crying over a naked newborn. “Kill her. We can make another.”
That had been Effie’s whole life up to this point.
She had that aura to her. She had the mark. Effie knew that her demon wasn’t evil and she knew because he had saved her. When her mother had tossed her from that high cliff into the roaring river he had been there watching. He had been waiting for he knew just how evil humanity could be.
Her demon raised Effie into a competent fighter and someone could raise themselves if needed. Before long she was taking mercenary jobs and supporting herself at a tender age. Effie didn’t know much about how her father figure had become her demon. She just knew he was and that was all there was to it. The man had kept much from her that he deemed to be unnecessary and harmless to her development.
Unfortunately, humanity didn’t change fast if ever and Effie found herself clashing swords with a bigger man. “I can smell it on you! I CAN SMELL IT. You demon bitch.”
It made Effie clench her teeth. “You need to calm down,” the demon spoke to her mentally as Effie took a breath. “Now swing.” Effie did as she was told and swung at the correct moment her sharp sword piercing through not only his armor but also his gut. She watched as the man spilled out in front of her but it left her unprepared for the arrows.
She got pierced in severely different areas. The force of the impact sent her off the cliff and into the river below. How fitting, the girl thought. This was how her life would end twice now. She felt the arrows being pulled from her as she blacked out. She didn’t know how or why she was still alive as she floated down the river.
The only thing she knew was coughing up the water and staring up at a boy for a brief second. Who? Why? She blacked out once more as her breaths heaved heavily thanks to the rain.
It would be a bit longer before she woke up and when she did her eyes darted to look around at the surroundings. Or they would have if it wasn’t for the large boy over her. The shriek left her lips as Irian left her lips. “GET AWAY FROM ME.” She took what was under her head and threw it. She started to get up when she felt the burn in her stomach. The cry left her lips as she put her hand to her belly. It was wet and not the type of wet that would come from water. The world lurched as she broke open her wounds again.

The rainy season is the same just about everywhere as it is in Ataiyo. The rivers swell past their banks, roads get flooded, and the roof tiles patter with the constant drip. Umbrellas like clusters of flowers are all down the streets of the city while people in straw-raincoats hurry along. Those fortunate enough can afford to ride in a carriage, but even then you can't escape the humidity and smell of rain. The singing of frogs lasts through the night as the showers drown out all other noise. Bridges are in constant repair until things dry out, and there's always the risk of getting caught in the surging waters. The rainy season also meant slower business for his family, and the ever constant vigilance against molding and spoilage. He was following the path home, having learned his lesson of straying too close to Menomori last time. Rashomaru was in a hurry as keeping paper dry was difficult when all you had were your clothes and a single umbrella. He was bringing back a written list of available goods the dry goods store would be having for the next week, which was severely limited by this year's early rainfall. He couldn't wait to get back home and sit in front of the fire.
Coming and going anywhere was easier said than done, as the heavy rains had caused several bridges in poorer condition to wash out. The roads were muddy and it was easy to slip into a muddy pit. At this point Arahabaki would be better as a walking staff, though it wouldn't be enough to help him climb his way out if the soil was soggy.
