Eclipse Mirror Temple
The remnants of a fallen order, this grand monastery and the surrounding valley were sealed off by ancient sorcerers to contain the chaotic energies within. Old talismans and powerful wards litter the walls, binding the restless eldritch creatures to this place. In the past it was known as Solstice Mirror Temple, home to a clandestine sect that utilized the energies of light and shadow to banish evil. The temple compound’s architecture is circular in design, shaped like a bronze mirror. As the temple fell into ruin, many of the buildings have completely deteriorated, while structures still standing have rotting floors and broken paths.
Although most of the buildings have been reclaimed by the land, the main temple itself and major wings are still intact. There are old scriptures and treasures still around if one looks hard enough, and despite the danger the valley is a hotspot for treasure-hunters and thrill-seekers. One should take care to tread carefully; the greatest danger lies in the distorted space within the buildings. The disaster that caused the temple to be sealed warped the location’s natural flow of magical energies, creating wild fluctuations in darkness and light that drastically distort the area at a moment’s notice.
There are areas where corridors twist and turn on themselves and labyrinths of endless rooms. Brightly lit areas suddenly turn dark and eerie, while the positioning of doors and hallways are inverted. Rumors say shadows of the members of the ancient sect still roam the halls, trapped in a state between life and death…
Locations:
Temple Outskirts
The valley surrounding the Eclipse Mirror Temple has become a shadow of its former self. A perpetual solar eclipse hangs above in the sky during the day and a blood moon shines its pale light on the land when evening falls. Broken statues and stone lanterns line the path into the valley. There is a set of great stone steps leading up to the temple’s broken main gate. The trees and grass remain as they were when the calamity struck, frozen in time. While eerily silent during the day, the area turns hostile and deadly as monsters become more active once the blood moon is out.
Twisting Corridors
Dilapidated halls connect between the different areas of the Eclipse Mirror Temple, sometimes shifting and changing where they lead when the temple’s energies fluctuate.
Inverted Labyrinth
Once the barracks and commons area for the sect that resided within these walls, it has become a maze of dimensionally connected rooms. Sometimes the doorways lead to dead ends, other times they transport a person to areas on the opposite side of the temple. If one is lucky, they might discover rooms that haven’t been touched in ages, or fall from the ceiling down into a chamber full of monsters.
Sundered Vault
Below the temple lies the sect’s underground armory and training grounds. Carved straight out of the bedrock, there are hidden traps at every corner. Many rooms are sealed by thick metal doors and a swift-moving underground river acts as a natural barrier to deter intruders. Ancient mechanisms remain, opening up alternative pathways through the vault if one knows how to use them.
Hall of Reflection
This is the central hall where sect members would gather when summoned in ages long past. The area has high ceilings made of exotic hardwood and polished stone pillars with ornamental carvings decorated in gold leaf. The smooth stone floor resembles polished nacre, giving a mirror-like finish. Well-preserved compared to the rest of the temple, occasionally one may experience scenes of the past when they stay for a while. Some explorers who have visited the place claim the hall is haunted, saying reflections and shadows begin to move on their own.
Chamber of Scrolls
This wing contains what is left of the fallen sect’s library. Dust and cobwebs cover the near-endless rows of shelves as parchment rots in the damp air. Maybe there might be a few books and scrolls that haven’t completely succumbed to damage. There are ladders that connect to higher levels of the library, though they have seen better days. Part of the roof has caved in, exposing the interior to the elements.
Chamber of Geomancy
This octagonal wing is arranged in the shape of the eight trigrams, with each side representing one of the eight natures: Heaven, Marsh, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, and Earth. There are no windows, only a set of double doors leading in. Tall candelabras surround the support pillars of the chamber. Their melted wax candles flicker with a ghostly light and flames that give off no heat. Murals of eight dragons line the walls, their gaze centered onto a circular platform in the middle. There is an ancient arcane array built into the woodwork, partially worn away by time.
Celestial Observatory
A five-story pagoda reaching up into the sky, this towering structure was designed for those who wished to study the heavens. The roof of the fifth floor has a dome of clear crystal, dividing the night sky into quadrants. Astrologers could gaze upward to chart the movements of the stars and divine events to come. The stairs between floors have started to fall apart, the floorboards becoming brittle in areas. Rusted equipment and old tomes clutter the area, making it hard to navigate.
Ruined Bell Tower
The last bell tower left standing, this fortified building houses one of the temple’s four bronze bells that would summon sect members to gather in the Hall of Reflection. The great bell can be accessed by a winding spiral staircase, though who knows what will happen if you ring it? It provides a good vantage point of the valley surrounding the temple. (Ringing the bell triggers a fight where enemies swarm the tower.)
Mirror’s Sanctum
Normally inaccessible due to the strong warding barriers, this chamber contains the corrupted Solstice Mirror, the main source of the temple and valley’s chaotic state. If outsiders choose to weaken the wards, they should prepare to face monstrous entities created by the mirror as the seals repair themselves. (I.e. Boss fight!)
