Even though Robin insisted that she be given time to retrain her arm before coming to live with me outright, there was rarely an instance that I left her alone. I recognized that she had a good heart, and, from personal experience, knew that such things frequently led to dire situations. More often than not, the righteous found themselves at the wrong end of a blade wielded by a stronger opponent. That piece of wisdom has held true regardless of time, and was fresh in mind when I noticed Robin heading in the direction of Itjivut after Ignius ran cold.

The Ataiyan warrior was smarter than the average teenager; I'll admit that. But when Gifre's Vault opened up, she followed along with my pessimistic expectations to the letter. Robin got it in her head that she would stop – or at least assist in stopping –the frigid Ignius that Xunatar had unleashed, but she vastly underestimated the cold of Itjivut's tundra. It was nothing like her winter training in the Tori Mountains, and she was freezing within minutes of getting off the boat that had ferried her there.

"Apparently a cloak wasn't enough," she chattered through the biting chill of the wind whilst marching out of the ice elf city of Hiadref. Her backpack and supplies were with her just in case she needed to make camp or hunt, but, by that point, she really wished she had shopped for an overcoat before she was already a mile away from the Reis farmlands. The vault was another few miles trek to the south, and that was a cold journey for a woman that had thought so little of the coldest region in Revaliir.

I was watching her at the time, using an assortment of scrying tools to keep an eye on her health. As you can imagine, I was worried when I saw what she had done, so I immediately went to preparing some camping tools for her: things that she would find necessary to survive in the tundra. They weren't ready just yet, but I was definitely prepared to help Robin despite my disapproval of her ill-thought preparations.

Katerina stepped off the ship that landed on the island of Itjivut. She inhaled the cold, loving the chill that hit her cheeks. This was her homeland, she spent many centuries here with her wolves. This was her place of peace. Now, The God of Lies decided to mess with nature by creating a vault out of the Wyvern she helped to take down. A sigh left her lips as she descended the ship onto the docks. The breeze blowing the tails of her coat behind her. Her wolves followed behind while frightening the inhabitants of the village. Her paw friends stayed close as she made her way into the village.  Her eyes looking from every shop for transportation. She needed a way to get to the vault quickly; not wanting to stay away from her family too long. Also, she wanted to see it for herself.

As soon as she turned the corner, a dog sled came into view. She smirked, an idea forming in her mind as she took a knee. She needed to make sure it was alright with her second in command. “Shadow, mind pulling a sled?” Katerina asked while scratching behind his ear. “Briber..” He growled as he tilted his head into her hand. A laugh left the red-haired woman as she continued to scratch his ear. “Damn cheeky briber….Alright. We will.” His answer made his alpha smile. “You’re the best.” She was excited and gave him a pat on the head before moving to the seller. “One dog sled please.” She asked handing the man a few coins. The seller’s eyes moved to look at the wolves behind her. “Uh…wo..wol…fff” He didn’t know what to say as he stepped away in fear. “They won't bite.” Katerina smiled at the man, then tossed the coins at him; catching them he ran into his house. “Scaredy Cat.” Shadow growled with a laugh.

It didn’t take much time to line up her wolves; they didn’t grumble once. “Thanks for doing this guys. I just want to make this fast.” Their alpha was grateful for her wolves. “Steak dinner when we get back.” She offered with a smile before stepping behind the sled. She moved her black scarf around to cover half of her face then pulled her fur lined hood over her head. Once the wolf demon was finished, she placed her feet on the foot-boards and gripped the handle with her leather gloved hands. “Let's go!” Katerina called to her wolves when she was ready.

The alpha’s pack moved fast across the snow. Excitement rushed through the wolfs, it had been so long since they had been home! A howl escaped each one of them as they sprinted over the snow.

A few hours past before they were a few miles from the vault. The wind blew against her and so did a scent. She knew that scent. “No way.” The wolf demon thought. With a smile, Katerina called to her wolves, “Go towards that scent!” They did as she ordered and changed their direction. “It must be her. Time for me to make my move.” The red-haired woman thought. “Robin will be in love soon enough Natsumi. First step, get to know the woman who would be with you.” The wolf demon pictured Natsumi in her mind. Even if the fox didn’t think them as friends, the wolf did and would do anything for her.

The image of a figure came into view and Katerina waved. “Hey!” She didn’t want to startle Robin by coming up on her to fast, so she slowed her wolves. They soon came up behind her, moving at the woman’s speed. “Hey there, are you going to the vault? I can give you a lift.” The pregnant woman smiled as she motioned towards the open basket of the sled.“It's freezing out here. This will get you there much quicker.” She offered her assistance to the woman before her, hoping she would take it. She needed her plan to go smoothly.

Robin trudged on in that harsh wasteland even as I set to preparing various survival packages for her. She was too stubborn to give up her quest, and had already gone far too inland to turn back. I almost had to go get her, to force her off that frozen island before she killed herself, but the arrival of a certain wolf helped me avoid that outcome.

Katerina always seemed to have a knack for showing up at the oddest times. When she slowly approached Robin from the horizon, using more warmth than I was accustomed to seeing from her, I started to feel a tad suspicious about her timing. However, searching the world using my salt flats mirror also revealed that the person on Itjivut was actually her. There was no static in the scrying like there would be if someone was trying to play tricks on me. And so, being relatively assured that this meeting was safe, I allowed it to happen.

Yet, despite my calm, Robin remained cautious when the dog sled appeared on the eastern horizon. She was still shivering in her boots while marching toward the vault, and she'd been walking for a long time without running into anyone else at all. For her predilections, the sudden appearance of a warm stranger after hours in solitary tundra felt too good to be true. In fact, she might have drawn her sword in response to Katerina's arrival if she wasn't so cold; especially since she didn't know if the wolf was trying to lower her guard with a jovial greeting. Luckily for those involved, however, Robin was definitely too cold to do something like that. She was so frozen to her core that she couldn't fight, let alone form a comprehensible sentence once Katerina was in earshot.

"Y-y-yeah," was all she could muster saying when the wolf asked her where she was headed. Icicles were forming on her eyebrows by that point, and her teeth chattered loudly as she turned around to face the pregnant, sled operator. She couldn't even laugh at what she assumed was a joke from Katerina about the weather, and just responded with, "I-I n-n-noticed," to the 'freezing' comment.

Understandably, Robin's first instinct was to tell Katerina to go away. Her past made her untrusting of others, and so she didn't fully believe the woman's sincerity. However, she was still familiar with the folly of pride, and knew she had to make a choice. In her mind, she was either going to freeze to death out of pride, or she was going to ride in Katerina's sled and risk being attacked. The choice was pretty obvious to her, and so she trudged over to the sled's open basket before practically falling into it. She set her backpack down beside her along with her bastard sword, and then started shivering before her boot knocked against something soft beneath her seat.

Hidden there in a nicely packed bundle was a thick wool blanket and a black overcoat much like the one Katerina was wearing. Attached to the package was a note in my handwriting, something that was clearly visible to any and all when the Ataiyan warrior brought it out into the open.

'Robin,' the parchment read, 'You already know this by now, but please bring a coat next time. It's not nice to make me worried when you're supposed to be recovering and not going out questing. Also, the woman next to you? Her name is Katerina. Give this note to her and she should be harmless… mostly. Watch out for hugs, and feel lucky that you don't have a tail for her to grab.' At the bottom of the note was my signature along with the fox-like, wax seal I customarily used on postage. Robin handed that note to Katerina after she was done reading, and then immediately opened the package I had teleported to her. She would have been smiling, were her face not already completely frozen. Instead, she used her dwindling energy reserves to quickly put on the overcoat beneath her cloak, and then wrapped herself up in the wool blanket like a small, cold animal. The arctic chill quickly left her after she was properly bundled, allowing her to, at last, sigh in relief.

Katerina stood watching the human before her. She was worried for the human and needed to get her into a warm place before the cold killed her. Unlike Robin, the cold didn’t bother the wolf. The pregnant woman noticed soon after arriving, the cold didn’t bother her like before. She thought she would be just like Robin; cold enough to cause chattering teeth. The heat of her fire magic kept her warm under only a coat and shirt. She knew that she wouldn’t die in this weather, but Robin could. If that happened while Katerina was still around, Natsumi would have her head.

Robin spoke the only words she could muster through her uncontrolled teeth. The red-haired woman stepped off the foot-boards of the sled; intended to help Robin into the sled. Noticing the strangers hesitation, she sighed. “You’re going to die out here if you don’t get in the sled.” Katerina urged.

It wasn’t long before the human stepped into the basket, without Katerina’s help. “Okay.” The alpha thought while stepping onto the foot-boards again. “Are you ready?” She asked, wanting to make sure she was secure before her wolves ran. Her eyes looked down to Robin and caught sight of the parasol. “How did that get in there?” Katerina asked over the howling of the wind. It wasn’t in there before, and Robin wasn’t carrying anything like that.

After Robin had finished reading the note, she handed it to the red haired woman. Katerina read the note with a smile; Natsumi was becoming a softy. Never had she received a gift like that from Natsumi. “Come to think of it… Besides Eva… nothing like that.” Katerina laughed a bit at her thought before handing the note back to the now bundled Robin. “So we have a familiar friend. She is a good friend to have.” She paused as she got herself ready for the sled to move. “Nice to meet you, Robin.” She said with a smile. She had already know her name but couldn’t say it until now.

“The snow will hit you hard, so here.”
Katerina stated before waving her hand over the woman. A blanket engulfed in flames appeared above Robin. The flames soon dissipated and left a blanket tied along the sides of the basket and over Robin like a tent. “This will keep the snow from hitting your face. And the blankets warm to the touch.” Once she was sure the human girl was warm and secure, Katerina called to her wolves.”Let's go!”

The alpha’s pack ran swiftly over the snow, trying to make the few miles short. It would only take them half an hour to forty five minutes tops. Along the way, the wolf demon remained mostly quiet. Her eyes looking around her through the falling snow. She didn’t want any creature’s coming up on them unexpectedly. “The Vault will be coming up soon.” She called down to Robin. For some reason, Katerina’s gut turned; she had a bad feeling. The snow was becoming thicker and she couldn’t really see. Though, that didn’t stop her nose from picking up the scent. “Shit. We got orcs close by. But I can’t see them!” She yelled to Robin over the wind.

The sled soon stopped suddenly. Her eyes looking all around them. Her wolves began to growl and that made her even more alert. Removing one hand from the handle of the sled, Katerina sword appeared engulfed in flames. Whatever was coming towards them, she needed to be prepared.

Prior to the delivery of my note, Robin had been respectfully declining Katerina's approaches. She appreciated the wolf's efforts, but she still didn't trust her; and Katerina's stating of the obvious did nothing to reduce that mistrust. Every action on the pregnant woman's part was met with a silent from the frozen girl, until, at last, my seal calmed her nerves.

Nervousness still pervaded Robin's demeanor beyond that point, but she now felt comfortable enough to talk to her rescuer instead of shunning her. The overcoat and blanket were thawing her frozen, defensive shell ever so slightly. Her bones followed suit, eventually returning to normal just as Katerina officially greeted her.

"Good morning, Katerina," the girl said while lightly bowing her head. "I suppose I should have expected that Lady Natsumi was watching me this whole time, though her mastery of magic still seems a tad frightening to me. I've never seen a mage as talented as her." For a second there, Robin looked down at her feet. Her expression was melancholy, like an old woman recalling a painful memory. "I don't deserve her kindness," she murmured under her breath, subconsciously crumpling my note in her hand.

Katerina's blanket fortress appeared then, sending the young girl from sadness into panic. "Ah," she cried, taken aback by the flames overhead! She fumbled with my note immediately afterward, preparing to jump out of the sled as a reflex; but she soon realized that there was nothing to fear. The flames disappeared, leaving only an embarrassed warrior sitting underneath her new blanket tent in wide-eyed paranoia.

"Sorry, still not used to magic on the fly. Please warn me next time," Robin said before snuggling into Kat's gift to her. If she wasn't warm before, she certainly was now. There would definitely be no trouble waiting in her toasty environs for the sled to get underway what with this new development, and so she did while remaining quiet the entire time. Her eyes closed in those moments before departure, giving her the look of a napping woman when, in fact, she was just descending into a light meditation.

Meanwhile, another note popped up in front of Katerina's face just before her pack started up again. I warped it in after Robin wasn't looking at the wolf anymore, intending the contents to only be read by Silverstein.

'P.S.,' that piece of parchment began, continuing on from the last message I had sent. 'If so much as a single dismemberment or patch of frostbite happens to Robin in that place because of you, Katerina, I'll hunt you down and gut you like a fish. If not, and you succeed in ensuring her safety, I have a cup of Ambrosia Wine(non-alcoholic) with your name on it. Think about it.' The letter tore itself apart after Katerina had read it, scattering its pieces to the four winds in an effort to erase all evidence. I admit the contents were a drastic, immature threat in hindsight, but, on some level, I was serious at the time. I did have some non-alcoholic wine to be used as a bribe.

At any rate, Robin and Katerina got underway shortly thereafter. The former was meditating during almost the entire trip, keeping just as silent as the latter until the blizzard intensified. Robin could sense the orcs before her driver spoke of them, and didn't need smell to identify them in the snow.

"Five on the ridge overlooking the vault, and another seven or so are flanking our cart." The Ataiyan warrior spoke quickly and clearly while making note of the orc's life energy amidst the snow.  She could sense magic and life in her immediate area by quieting her mind like in meditation – a skill she picked up in training – and so she didn't need to see her brutish enemies to find them in those low visibility conditions.

However, seeing them wasn't enough. When Katerina stopped the sled, she sprung an ambush from the flanking orcs. One of them came up from the rear, smashing into and overturning the sled. Robin jumped out of her basket before she was trapped underneath, taking her bastard sword and backpack with her. She didn't know what happened to Katerina, but she certainly didn't abandon her to run. Instead, she hid amongst the snow, cautiously measuring the actions of their enemies as she prepared a counterattack.

As the women grew closer towards the vault, a message had appeared before her face, and smacked her right in the face. “Dammit.” The alpha cursed as she grabbed the paper. While reading the note to herself, she laughed. Natsumi. I have never seen you so protective… over a human.” She smiled at her thought. “I’ll make sure nothing happens to her….Plus I really want that wine. With alcohol in it.” With the last words read, the parchment tore itself apart and flew off into the wind.

Right after the letter was gone, the smell of orc hit the red-haired woman. She couldn’t tell how many there were only that they were close by. The words from Robin shocked the wolf demon. Robin had very keen senses and was much more than a mere human. Before Katerina could speak about how impressed she was, the orcs attacked and overturned the sled. Sending the wolf flying into a pile of fresh fallen snow. Anger grew within the wolf demon, what she hated most of all was being caught off guard, especially by an orc.

Standing up, the hood of her coat fell back onto her shoulders, and the wolf dusted the snow off her shoulders and her pants. She hated the fact some had got inside her boot. She couldn’t do anything about that now, there was orcs before her. She only saw three, where the others ones were, she did not know. Going for her sword, she sighed, it wasn’t on her anymore and she didn’t have time to look for it. Holding out one of her hands to the side, flames erupted from her palm, and soon dissipated leaving a broadsword in her hand. The sword had a black hilt, with a black and silver blade, the ancient writing along the blade glowed slightly as she held it.

The orcs didn’t wait for the red-haired woman to charge, being the beasts they were they charged first. The first orc flung his ax at her; Katerina ducked, the ax flying right over her head into the snow behind her. This movement from the first orc left him open. Her blade came up and sliced into his stomach; black guts fell onto the snow below him. Moving quickly, she stood and brought her sword down onto his neck. His head rolled on the ground while his body fell forward.

Her attackers roared and came at her filled with anger. Katerina blade connected with an on coming ax that was aimed for her face. The wolf used all her strength to push against the blades, the orc was flown backward into another orc, and they both tumbled into the snow.

Katerina’s wolves had managed to get out of the leather belts then soon ran over to the fallen orcs and sunk their teeth into the black flesh.

The alpha took the chance to give quick glance around her. “Where are you, Robin?!” Katerina thought not realizing there was a fist coming at her face. It connected with her face, and sent her flying into the snow. “Shit…” She whispered as she touched her cheek. Her eyes widened at the orc that came into view before her. Soon she saw the shadows of eight more standing behind him. They were attacking her wolves; the yelps and growls carried over the wind towards her and then…nothing. “No… “ She stood and got her sword ready. They wouldn’t hurt her wolves and get away with it.

The orc before her was much larger than she, maybe almost nine feet tall. His body could have been made of four of her, and made of pure muscle. This didn’t make the wolf back down, instead she ran towards him. He blocked every one of her attacks. His fellow orcs moved to stand behind him; unmoving and watching. They didn’t see the only wolf that wasn’t going to stay down. Growling as he ran up, Shadow latched his teeth onto the orcs arm that was attacking his alpha. Taking the orc’s attention, the wolf was thrown off into the wind. His body hitting a rock that was buried in the snow; the crunch echoed in the wind.

The alpha took that moment to stab the orc before her. The sword in his gut didn’t faze him, he stepped forward to let the sword go deeper and out his back; roaring in her face as he came closer. Katerina’s eyes widened, and didn’t see the black hand coming up; he grabbed her by the throat and lifted her up high. The wolf demon was picked up as his fingers squeezed around her throat. She kicked and tried to hit his arm, she couldn’t even concentrate to use her powers. Katerina was caught off guard once more. Would this claim her life?

If I'm to be honest and fair about Katerina, I must admit that she is no slouch of a warrior. When paired with her pack, she has the potential to be a fearsome foe: able to take on a small platoon of orcs with little to no trouble. However, her specialty is and always has been in frontal assaults – not ambushes. When the orcs came up from behind her sled near Gifre's Vault, she crumbled like any other soldier that had been caught off guard. An orc fell to her blade before her side was overwhelmed, true, but that didn't stop the chieftain from capturing her.

Just like that, the pack had been beaten down. Shadow had been gravely injured, and Katerina was being strangled in mid-air. Had she been alone, that might well have been the end of the wolf. Her concentration was failing, her spells slipping from her grasp. Perhaps the only thing she could hear as she started to black out was the laughing of the orc skirmishers around her; at least until the chieftain let out a death gurgle.

Robin had been preparing a counterattack for this orc and his unit whilst the wolf kept them busy, but the battle's current course forced her to retaliate earlier than she planned. As part of her initial assault, seven shuriken found their way into the throat of the chieftain, stopping him before he could finish off the woman in his hands. Robin had left wires through the center of each of these stars, allowing her to yank them back after they connected and, by extension, amplify their damage. Together, the seven projectiles inflicted deep lacerations on the orc's neck, sending him into enough pain that he could no longer maintain his grip on Katerina.

The chieftain wasn't killed outright by this attack, of course. Shuriken are rarely fatal unless poisoned, and my friend was against using tactics like that in the first place. She did still finish off her opponent, though; make no mistake of that. As soon as the chieftain let Katerina go, Robin climbed up his back and slit his throat with her dagger: all before disappearing back into the whiteout.

The other orcs in that chieftain's group tried to follow their agile assailant, but they were unsuccessful in tracking her movements. Instead, they were slowly picked off by a seemingly invisible enemy. The rear most vanguard was first to go, his neck being caught by a whip from behind. That makeshift noose of his would have strangled him to death under normal circumstances, but, rather than go quietly, he turned around and charged. He didn't manage to avoid death even with that valiant effort, however, instead dying from a knife to the brain through his eye before asphyxiation took him.

Three of the remaining orcs in the squad tried to group up after they noticed another of their member had fallen. Their protective circle was in vain, though, for a blow from Robin's bastard sword quickly shattered their ranks. One orc was killed instantly from the heavy, downward strike; while the other two were wounded severely enough to be taken out of combat.

That only left four orcs from the original ambush group, plus the two others that had yet to show their faces. The latter of those two squads retreated to the vault, joined by two orcs from the former group who now feared for their lives. All remaining members were too proud to give up the fight, and so charged at the slayer of their companions.

Robin threw a snowball into the eyes of the foremost member of that group, blinding him for a few seconds while the other swung wildly at her. He behaved like a berserker, forcing the woman to retreat until she drew near the body of her attacker's dead comrade. To outside eyes, she appeared unable to counter this onslaught, but, in reality, she was just waiting for a chance. Once she was within range of the fallen orc, she looted the crude shield from his body, used it to deflect his comrade's axe away from her face, and then slashed the object's serrated edge against her attacker's throat.

He died almost instantly, his black blood squirting out onto the snow; and then there was one: a measly orc who had been stalled by a snowball and was now facing off against someone who had just taken out six of his companions in the span of seconds. Robin taunted that lone survivor into attacking her by tossing her weapons aside and beckoning to him with two fingers. He seemed to treat the action as a threat to his pride, for he too tossed aside his weapons and ran at the girl with bare fists once he saw.

His punch came first in that brawl, though it never connected. Instead, Robin's arm wrapped around his, immobilizing it with her strength. The same thing happened with the next punch, making it so the orc was unable to move as Robin struck his chin with her heel. She rushed him while he was still reeling from that kick, punching him in the stomach repeatedly until he slouched low enough for her to hit his head. When that happened, she stepped on top of his scalp, vaulted into the air, and came down with both arms on top of his skull.

The last orc was swiftly knocked unconscious by that attack, leaving everything quiet once more. All of the ambushers had been removed from battle or scared off; allowing Robin to, at last, breathe easy. She was actually sweating in that blizzard now, breathing heavy after having exerted herself so thoroughly. After her last opponent had fallen, however, those were the least of her concerns. Instead, she looked down at her hands with an expression of purest shock.

"How'd I do that," she asked, not being able to believe her own strength? She still didn't understand what I meant when I said I would help her improve, and was only now starting to notice the improvements I made. Her strength and agility were beyond a normal human woman now, and she would only keep improving the longer she stayed with me.

“I could transform…” Katerina thought as she hung in the air by the orc. She continued to kick and hit him, but it did nothing; He didn't wince at the pain. All the orc did was smile and growl lightly at the woman in his hand. He was taking pleasure in seeing her struggle in his grip. “I can’t..” Her mind kept repeating as she tried to form a plan in her mind. She wouldn’t transform into her wolf self, but try another way. “There…has..to be another..way.” The wolf demon’s thoughts slowly began to trail off as her eyesight began to fade. As she felt herself began to fade into darkness, the red-haired woman’s body slowly stopped moving. Her arms and legs dangled beneath her.

The grip on her throat suddenly failed, and her body was released to fall hard on the snow beneath her. She automatically started to cough as her hand went to her throat. She knew the bruises on her throat were going to be worse then ever and would take a few days to heal. Her daughters would have so many questions, but at least she was alive.

The wolf demon blinked as she looked up before her. She could only see the blur of a knife? She couldn’t see what it was, but she did feel the spray of blood on her face and the orc falling to his knees. Katerina had to scoot back quickly, or the orc would've fallen on top of her. “Holy shit…” She thought and her eyes looked up to see the blur of black blobs running away from her. Another blur of a figure soon appeared. The figure was quick, attacking the blobs of orcs and leaving them to fall in the snow. Her eyes soon focused on one part of the blurred figure. “Is that a tail???” She paused in her words and tried to focus her eyes more. “Is that a cat?! Saving my life?!” Katerina sighed but couldn’t let this get to her.

A whimper on the wind took her attention from the newcomer. Katerina blinked a few times; she needed her eyes to focus, and now. “Shadow..” The wolf demon whispered as she spotted him heading over to her. He hobbled over on three legs, his fourth held up. A whimper escaping him any time he put his weight on it. “Shadow! My boy.” The alpha gasped as she stood up. Losing her balance for only a moment before she was able to run to him.

Dropping beside her second in command, her hands softly grabbed onto his paw. “I will be okay.” He said to her as he tried to put his paw down, but whimpered once more. “You can’t be on it, Shadow! You’ll hurt yourself even more.” Her head turned to see the last of the orcs run into the vault nearby. Her eyes soon widened at what she saw. Robin was taking on an orc. Her punches came quick at his stomach, then was leaping in the air. “Whoa. He is fucked.” Katerina couldn’t believe what she was seeing in the human girl. Her last move knocked him out cold. “No wonder why she likes her.” The wolf demon thought with a smirk.

“Kat..” She heard her name from behind her, making her turn quickly. Her wolf pack came over to her and growled. “Where are the rest of them?” Maleficent asked as she came over to nudge her mate. “Robin and I will take care of the rest of them. You must get Shadow to one of the caves nearby so he can rest.” She ordered as she stood. The wolf demon headed towards the fallen sled, and picked it up to straighten it. “Leash up.” She nodded towards the belts. The wolves gave a nod and ran over to the belts, then slipped it over their heads. As her wolves got themselves attached to the sled, Katerina went back over to Shadow. He didn’t speak this time but let his alpha pick him up and set him in the bed of the sled. “Get him somewhere safe.” She nodded towards them before they howled and ran off into the snow.

Robin’s voice was soon carried over the wind towards the wolf. Making her way towards Robin, the alpha stood beside her. “Does it matter how you did that? What matters is you saved my life.” Katerina stood before Robin and smiled. “A gift.” The red-haired woman waved her hand over each wrist of the human. The fire appeared, not burning any clothing, but leaving behind two vambraces. They were made of hair leather, but the three claw like knifes on the outside where sharp, curved and pointed. They even matched her clothing. “Makes that move of yours even more deadly.”

The wolf demon’s eyes moved to the entrance of the vault; orcs had retreated inside. Glancing back at Robin, she smiled. “Let’s go hunt some orc,” Katerina said. Turning away, she headed towards the vault door.

Of the four orcs that managed to retreat during the mountain pass massacre, only two made it beyond the gate. Half of their fold bled out from wounds delivered by Katerina's pack, and the others couldn't be bothered to stop and save them. Those unlucky enough to suffered fatal wounds staggered part way through the trip, falling lifeless on the snow long before the gates opened. Their black ichor left an easy trail to follow, but no such hunt was ever conducted.

Instead, Katerina tended to her fallen friends. They had all survived the encounter with the ambush party, though not one had escaped unharmed. Shadow's injuries were the worst, forcing his pack leader to order him away. Robin was just finishing up the last of the orcs when that order was given, still trying to figure out how normal training had increased her combat performance so incredibly. She was about to move over to Katerina to check her vitals once she pulled her head out of those stars, but was, instead, approached by the woman before she could even move.

"Are you sure," Robin asked her driver out of worry? She didn't fully believe that Katerina was fine, especially given those bruises around her neck. The young girl's worry soon turned to panic, however, once her friend's magical fire appeared again.

Rather than learn from last time and remain calm, Robin hurriedly stuffed both of her hands into the snow in a vain attempt to extinguish the flames that surrounded them anew. Only seconds later, when it finally occurred to her that she wasn't burning, did she pull them out and actually look with a calm mind. Her forearms, it turned out, were decorated with new vambraces because of the wolf demon, the first pair she had worn since her exile from the Mori family. The flames had been harmless after all.

Of course, being the warrior that she was, Robin didn't stop her mind from racing even after she realized that she had been given a gift. Her first instinct, as with any new element to her arsenal, was to evaluate the effectiveness of her gift from the standpoint of combat efficiency. Unfortunately for Katerina, though, that evaluation was less than favorable.

Robin had never liked spiked armaments. She thought they got caught on surfaces far too often, leading to early item destruction and high replacement bills. The repair fees, in her experience, were also high, because vambraces of the caliber she had been given were frequently either composed of rare materials that were hard to find or were made using elaborate smithing practices not known to common artisans. Either way, the warrior rarely went into battle with pieces like that, at least not without first having them adjusted. She knew she couldn't afford to visit a famous blacksmith every time her equipment got stuck in some unlucky goblin's skull, so she would likely remove the fins from Katerina's gift later on.

Yet being the polite person she was, Robin felt constrained in expressing herself on the matter. She knew it would be rude and dishonorable to reveal her intentions so soon after the receiving the gift, so she kept her mouth shut. For Robin, Katerina was a friend of mine, of her master. That meant she was deserving of respect, so she treated the woman with courtesy far above my standards.

"Thank you," she said, ending the conversation with a simple expression of gratitude. Her gaze turned to the orc then, the same one she had just beaten down. He was still unconscious for the moment, but there was no guarantee he would stay that way. "He's definitely not dead; just knocked out. I dislike killing anything that can't defend itself, but I will finish him off if you deem it necessary."

The Ataiyan fully expected her rescuer to say, "Yes," and so she went to fetch her equipment from the skirmish sites nearby. Her bastard sword, backpack and stray knife were all collected from the battle ground with haste, being re-equipped as needed.  The only thing left out of its sheath by the end was the first of these items, and Robin walked up to the unconscious orc with it already poised to strike.

Her intent had been to wait for Katerina's command at that point, but fate had something else in store. Just as Robin paused in front of the orc, a puddle of blood started forming next to him.

'Blood?' Although confused by this strange occurrence, the woman was no fool. She quickly noticed that there was something odd about that puddle, and dodged back as soon as she saw it begin to boil. A woman's scream shattered the frozen tundra's silence then, marking the arrival of something foul. With six limbs and the face of a woman, a demon emerged from the snow, killing the orc next to her before making a beeline toward Katerina.

"Look out!" Robin shouted when she saw the spider maiden's intent. She tried to chase after it, but could barely move an inch before a blinding light erupted in the direction of the vault. In an instant, the gates exploded in a fantastic display of magic crashing down to earth, and the vault, which suffered heavy damage, expelled great plumes of exhaust.

Yes, it was at that point that Gifre's curse was lifted.  Robin and Katerina were actually late to the vault, arriving long after most had already disembarked to the area. The light that had summoned everyone in the beginning was now collapsing in on itself, coming back down like a bolt from the heavens. Ignius was returning, and for a reason that would likely be lost to the ages.

Of course, the lifting of Gifre's curse didn't banish the spider demon. That was something else. A few short moments after the vault doors erupted in chaos, a faint yell could be heard on the horizon. Flying from inside the bowels of that site was a round shield caught on fire for some inexplicable reason; and, as that shield grew nearer to Robin and Katerina, the volume of the yelling increased.

"Ahhhh," the shield went as it crashed into the spider demon before she could reach the lone wolf. A gargoyle was careening through the air alongside it, also smashing into the monster, but the fire on the shield appeared to be what offended the spider most. Soon, another deafening screech could be heard, and the abomination that had arrived mere moments ago retreated into the snow.

The source of the yelling appeared soon after: a miniature wyvern with scales as red as the festival dragons back home. He had been inside the body of the shield, flying on it like a discus until now. After the collision, though, he was dizzy and spouting off nonsense while staggering in the snow. "I am the great stone dragon! Fear me!"

Katerina wanted to finish off the orcs who had run off into the vault. Yes, her dogs had just about killed them, but she wanted the final strike. She hated orcs, but not as much as she hated pirates. Pushing the thoughts from her mind, she stopped in her tracks to wait for the human to retrieve her things. She turned around to watch her stand over the orc. Remembering what she said, she shrugged. “It all depends on you. You may kill him or you can wait till he comes after us again. When he wakes, he will be pissed at the person who took him down. He will-” Her words caught in her throat when she heard the scream. The ear piercing scream made the red-haired woman cover her ears.

 “What the fuck?!”
Katerina cursed as she saw the creature appear from the ground. She could barely hear robin scream. Her eyes turned to look over to see the explosion of the vault. Her body was flung forward into the snow near Robin. “Today is not my day…” The wolf thought as she spat out snow and dirt from her mouth.

Standing from her spot in the snow, the alpha turned to look at the vault that was destroyed. Her eyes caught sight of the shield flying through the air, lit with fire. Her eyes quickly looked at the spider demon who was headed her way. Drawing her sword, she took her stance. She was ready to defend herself and kill the demon before her.

The wolf’s eyes widen at the shield that hit the spider demon. Maybe she didn’t have to fight after all? She was sure tired. She had to hold in a laugh as she watched the demon retreat. A little fire and she scurried off. Her attention was soon taken by the small wyvern. A smile lit her face at his words. She was about to speak, but was caught off by large gushes of wind. Something big was flying towards them.

“Yes. You are the mighty stone dragon, Mushu. We all bow before you.” The large gargoyle landed beside his friend. He leaned down to pat his friend on the head, before cupping his hands and letting the dragon fall into his hands. Standing as he picked up the small dragon, his eyes landed on a beauty he had never seen before. A tall woman with hair bright as fire. His hands released Mushu and dropped him back into the snow before moving before the wolf demon.

Katerina didn’t know what to think of the gargoyle before her. She could tell that he wasn’t a threat, but what was he doing. When he was a few feet before her, he dropped down to one knee. As he withdrew his sword, she grew uneasy and started to step back. She had heard about the strength of gargoyles and didn’t want to face one at that moment. The sword didn’t made everything a bit worse. His sword was made of pure bone and was large. It was menacing and was probably bigger than her.
