Once someone steps into the perimeter of the Vault, they will feel a coldness deeper here than from any other area on the island. At the foot of the Vault resides an enormous pair of iron gates, each resembling two halves of Gifre holding it. It is so cold to the touch that frostbite can occur in a matter of moments. Regardless of the person, the gates will open themselves. Beyond the Gates one will find themselves in serpentine halls made of ice, bone and scales. They twist and turn with seemingly no end and an arrangement of booby traps wait for potential victims. Walls that shoot arrows, pitfalls with no bottom, fake tunnels that can lead out of the vault entirely are but just a few of them. There are also some secret passages; some lead to bits of the treasure and others do not. Tiny wyverns hang from the ceilings like bats and while they may look ferocious, they are not very dangerous for the prepared adventurer. The glacier salamanders, on the other hand, are quite deadly. Like their fire kin, these large beasts crawl about the ground, walls and ceilings and harness the power of ice to capture their prey.
There are multiple hallways that will lead to the Black Foyer. In comparison to the rest of the Vault, this is a place where warmth resides. The area is lite with torches with strange blue flames known as the cold flame. Withered banners line the walls, along with broken chairs and tables and bookshelves with dragonic literature scattered about. There is an enormous fireplace at the end of the room; like the torches, cold flame burns from it endlessly. The danger, however, is far from over. It is commonplace to see goblins, orcs and even some of the inhabitants of Hiadref compete against one another to find Gifre’s hoard. These disputes are often violent and they won’t hesitate to attack each other or outsiders. They are infected with the essence of greed, remnants of the wyvern himself. One must be careful and have enough willpower as to not succumb to that very plague- the longer they stay in the vault, the more susceptible they become. Beyond the Foyer, two large staircase travels up and down respectively.
If the staircase going down is taken, one will hear the faint sounds of water flowing the further they descend. At the bottom, the awe inspiring sight of the cavern will come to view. At the bottom there are rivers that run from an expansive lake, pure and unfroze. It is, like most things here, extremely cold and carries a feeling of dread within its beauty. Rumor has it that within this grotto, the treasures most sacred to the late frost wyvern is buried either beneath the icy earth or within the lake. A bountiful horde of gold and silver, gems the size of human heads, artifacts believed to be destroyed eons ago- all of this and more had been collected by Gifre and his forces for centuries and now reside in this portion of the vault. There resides nothing else other than the little wyverns; but unlike the ones from before, these creatures’ talons carry an acute poison that can overwhelm its victims if exposed to enough attacks.
If the staircase going up is taken, it will eventually lead to the Nexus. This spacious room houses the towering beam of unbridled energy that is causing the extreme change of climate. The temperature’s at its coldest and prolonged periods of time spent here isn’t recommended. There are no traps about or any sort of protection here; just the energy that is so strong that the room itself may feel as though one is in a terrible snowstorm. For some reason, there is something else there, a throne of ice that is positioned far into the room so that the sitter may watch the spectacular unfold if they wish. Another strange occurrence is that every now and then, one can swear to hear the sounds of a mighty roar, as if Gifre is still among this world…
