History Olvar was raised on a small farm outside of Mooncrest, in the DaeLuin countryside with little exposure to magic. His father, Otto, was a man of honest work, warning away any travelers who may have held an unnatural spark; his mother, Eda, was a gentler, quieter sort, content with their quiet life. Olvar and his siblings–two brothers and a sister–were in charge of caring for the livestock and tending the grounds.
At a young age, his mother fell ill, leaving a heavier work load to fall upon the shoulders of his older sister, Meggy. Her chores were more or less given to his older brother, Samuel, sparing Olvar and the youngest son, Cole, from extra work. After only a few months, his mother passed, but his father was quick to remarry, despite his children's distaste for the woman. Their instincts were correct to be distrustful, and after only a few years, the woman was discovered to be a witch, controlling their father's mind. It was Olvar's older brother who acted first, attacking the deceitful manipulator with his siblings at his side. The resulting conflict killed his father and his older brother, and the witch's dying moments were used to curse the three remaining siblings.
Naturally, the surrounding families found out when the head of the house was found scorched almost beyond recognition. While supportive at first, the first new moon after the incident revealed three newly-made lycans, and Olvar's sister was killed by the son of a neighboring farmer. The two remaining brothers were forced to flee, and they struggled through the wilderness until they finally arrived in Minoc, a city living under the thumb of pirates and thieves.
The pair scraped along as beggars for a few months, barely surviving the nights until a pirate crew offered them work. While Olvar's brother accepted, Olvar himself refused to leave the mainland for a life keeping the decks clean. After a bitter farewell, the two parted ways, and the last remaining son of a dead farmer was left alone.
Thievery kept him fed, trickery kept him alive, and luck kept him more or less in one piece. When the monotony of the city grew to be too much, he took to the road, using the reputation his curse had built in Minoc to make a living for himself. Unfortunately, news of the rogue lycan drew adversary as well as fear, and some who knew of him had a small bounty put on his head.
Years after the slaughter of his family, Olvar had taken to wandering DaeLuin, avoiding the south and doing his best to embrace the curse that ruined his life. Under the dark blanket of a new moon, one of his beastly raids turned sour when the farmland was rescued by an armored noble from an allied banner. Count Simon de Montefort pitied Olvar once the sun rose however, and rather than kill him, the paladin took the shifter on as a squire, attempting to teach honor and honesty to the lycan criminal. Olvar, being as headstrong as he is, offered to be nothing short of stubbornly uncooperative under Simon's supervision and saintly patience.
It was only a year later that his life received yet another unexpected twist. What had appeared to be a simple puddle in every way had concealed a portal of sorts. Upon stepping into the seemingly harmless little pool, Olvar dropped through the thin sheet of water, falling through foggy open air before plunging unceremoniously into a lake. The lycan resurfaced in a sputtering mess of curses and clumsy, panicked swimming. Though dazed and confused, he made it to shore, soaked to the bone and furious that somehow, despite his best efforts, magic had thrown his life into chaos once again. He had learned much from his time as a squire, but without Simon to rein him in, Olvar thought himself free to follow his own path now. To his surprise, his knight was not far behind, and they were reunited, as well as Simon's long lost son, Raphael, before too long.
As he grew, both as a person and a beast, his attention turned to a rumor whispered in closed circles; a miracle that seemed too good to possibly be true… a cure. Though suspicious of magic and wary of the unknown, he knew this opportunity could be that of a lifetime. Astride his mighty warg, Ojuk, the young knight set off on what some called a wild goose chase.
Five long years passed before Olvar, now carrying himself as a knight errant would, returned from his great quest. The rumor had proven to be a falsehood, at least as far as he had found. But the journey was not a waste in his eyes. The shifter had acted well upon his old mentor's lessons, taking every opportunity to learn what he could of the world. Now, returning home with Gaea and two new little ones, he is eager to see what lies in store.
Lupundra Generally speaking, lupundra are a type of werewolf. They can come with a variety of sizes, colors, and temperaments. Appearance in "bestial form" is more or less dependent on appearance in "human form". Brown hair translates to brown fur, short and stocky to low and strong, and so on. They are canine in appearance, and are able to stand on their hind legs to walk like a man over short distances–this is a slower, clumsier motion however, and four legs is preferred. Their size alone can make them quite daunting in a battle, though few ever get to be near civilized areas since many will try to keep their powers isolated or controlled. Others, however, have been seen using their abilities to take power over small, undeveloped towns by way of scaring the population into obedience.
Some werewolves can control when they change, others change during a full moon. Lupundra do neither. Instead, they are forced into changing every
new moon. Those attempting to keep themselves contained often keep track of when these nights are coming, and will bring themselves as far from populated areas as possible before the change occurs. Others simply stay away from civilization for the entirety of their lives, and others still look forward to such nights.
Many old legends say that the only way to kill a werewolf is by using silver. This is true for the lupundra, but only if the silver comes in contact with the heart. Bleeding out is also an option so long as the wounds causing the bleeding are inflicted with silver weapons. Recovery from such wounds will always result in scarring. There are several other 'pressure points' that can have a variety of effects on the lupundra (temporary paralysis, mild stunning, instant loss of consciousness, etc.). Most memories of the "rampage" are forgotten, or pushed to the back of the lupundra's mind once they return to a human state. With practice, these memories can be reached with minimal effort. The same is true of a lupundra recalling human memories, though this is usually more difficult due to communication barriers between the bestial and human mindsets.
