This particular tempest however struck a vessel seeking to travel from one side of the world to the other all in one go. Stocked with provisions and a full crew of men and women more than able to handle the treacherous journey, sometimes fate has other things in store. It was on this vessel that a five-year-old boy and his parents were making their travels.
Clutching each other below deck, the family hoped to wait out the storm and trusted in the crew to bring them to safety. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Cracks of lightning struck her deck, cracking the reinforced wood deeply all the way through her belly. From here Nyella’s waves gradually but effectively wrenched the ship in two, forcing the two halves away from each other. With the ship sinking quickly, decisions had to be made fast. The little family of three was pulled apart, though the mother had been struck in the head and died before water had even started to flood into their level.
In a panic the little boy grasped to whatever he could, water splashing in, cold and gripping down his throat and nostrils with each pound of Nyella’s wrath. Despite the father’s tries, the little child was pulled deep into Nyella’s depths; sent spiraling and flailing with the undercurrent deeper and deeper. The night was black and cold, but with each clash of lightning the night sky lit so brightly one would think it day time. As the child managed a squint through the waves the last thing he saw was the moon illuminated behind clouds as the fiercest of lightning struck through the sky; the thunder’s clap dampened in the boy’s ears as he was pulled closer and closer to the ocean floor.
When consciousness returned it was to the unyielding sun against his eyes and sting of salt in his wounds as he lay beached against the shore. Nowhere were any people to be seen, no other survivors and certainly no clear explanation for how he had arrived onto the sandy beach alive. As little Dorian rose onto his exhausted legs and looked out to the sea he was filled with something very different than fear…He rose with purpose. His parents who had perished had not been worthy of the ocean’s mercy, but he had. And while he loved them dearly, he knew in his heart that they didn’t deserve to be where he was now.
Nyella had chosen him and him alone to survive the ship’s sinking, and it is for that very reason that his life has been devoted to serving her. As his eyes lifted up he gazed at the day moon, wondering which hemisphere of the world he was on in order to see the moon and sun with one another. His eyes slowly returned to the now calm waves as they licked up the sand and around his ankles, caressing him with a perpetual love he couldn’t have imagined from his mother. The sun beat warmth and resurgence into his cold body, and as he looked up to it he found his eyes narrowing in judgment before turning them to the still present moon. If not for the moon then his sweet ocean’s life would not be as strong.
A smile curling on his lips, he turned his back on the sun and slowly tread his way into the island’s vegetation. It was on this island’s sandy shores that he would live out the next ten years of his life, being raised only by himself and the moon and ocean’s guidance. With their fierceness and strength he would learn his lessons, and learned of the natural magicks with which Nyella was always bountiful. Until he too began to slowly fuse his own life essence with hers…
He's a dick. (Ok there's more than that, but that'll come soon.)
