All About Valnar Deett
Valnar has the typical appearance of a Drow, the dark skin and the white hair, but his eyes are a piercing sky blue instead of the common red. Valnar keeps his hair about shoulder length and either loose and unkempt or in a ponytail that's tied so loose it may as well be not tied at all. Valnar stands at 6 feet even and weighs about 190 pounds in an athletic build from his time and work spent on the farm of his adoptive parents. Valnar at first will typically wear economic and durable clothing, leathers and rough cloth. If Valnar's dreams of becoming a ranger are realized he will wear a combination of leather and plate armor with chainmail. If Valnar remains an adventurer it will be mostly leather armor and a cloak.
HISTORY
Valnar was found as a baby, abandoned at the door of a young farmer and his new bride, Jeffers and Alia Deett. The Deett land was a small farm on the very fringe of a village in the foothills of the Ancense Mountains, the main crops being beets, radishes and potatoes, with a small coop of chickens, two hogs and an ancient horse named Pebble. As Valnar got older he, of course, began helping around the farm doing minor jobs and gradually began even making trips into the village to make small purchases and sell some eggs to their neighbors. Valnar shortly realized that he was being shunned by the other parents of the village, they would never buy eggs from him yet buy the same eggs when Alia went later the same day, and it hurt at first but this is when Alia introduced Valnar to books and he didn't care about his maltreatment anymore. Valnar began reading anything he could get his hands on and would often stop traveling merchants to borrow their books while they were in town, he read few books this way but the ones that were his he treasured more than if he had a mound of gold. Valnar's habit of speaking to merchants soon turned into a guessing game of the caravan's origin between Jeffers and Valnar, Valnar would spy out what colors they were flying, their mode of dress and speech and what wares they were selling and he would report to Jeffers who, invariably, always guess correctly. Valnar longed to travel in a caravan or even alone just to see the world and all it's wonders, he got to see a small part with the caravans and merchants and warriors but it was like trying to get an idea of a rooms belongings by looking through a keyhole, it wasn't enough!
Between the ages of 25-35 Valnar developed a rebellious streak that stemmed from the fear of losing his adoptive parents, whose age began to show in their faces and lightening hair color. Valnar had seen other elders around the nearby village and knew what the white hair and wrinkles meant, he had attended a couple funerals of people the Deetts had known. Valnar began shirking his duties around the farm and more often could be found roaming the countryside avoiding having to work or to see his aging parents. One day Valnar decided that he was going to run away, he reasoned that not knowing when they would die hurt less than watching them die, he made it as far as the Virens Forest when tragedy finally struck. A couple trolls had decided to hold a bridge and collect crossing taxes from all travelers and when Valnar, who very obviously couldn't pay, tried to cross he was quickly stuffed into a sack and carried the short distance to the trolls' lair. Luckily, while the trolls were discussing whether to eat him or collect ransom, an elven ranger stalking prey nearby heard the trolls and mounted a heroic rescue of a very frightened and humbled Valnar. The ranger later revealed to Valnar that he had been sent to dispatch that very group of trolls for their terrorism of the honest people traveling the road and constantly reminded Valnar just how lucky he was the whole journey home. Despite the ranger's remonstrances, Valnar would forever desire to become a ranger all the rest of his days.
Shortly after Valnar turned 53 was when he had made up his mind to leave the farm life, between the burning desire to see the world and his wish to become a ranger there was little chance he was going to stay. Jeffers and Alia were both quite old at this time and were concerned about being able to carry on by themselves but understood that this is what their son needed to do. Jeffers got some money together for Valnar, "For starting ye on yer journey son, don't spend it all on the women! Those city women are wilier than a cornered fox, they are." Alia also gave Valnar a pendant that had been found on him as a baby, it was simple yet exquisitely made of a small rectangular stone of darkest black flecked with silver. Valnar made his heartfelt goodbyes and with a heavy heart left the small farm and set off for the City of Adeluna proper.
