Like most creatures Yelena's age she seems to have stopped her mental growth when Celeste changed her. Though she is slowly progressing to a more mature way of thought as time goes on… She is overall naturally timid, happy, and full of energy. She has been known to keep secrets though it got worse after her change, this could be attributed to her sire being the same way so those traits became more natural in her.
She is an accomplished spy and tracker. She is a master of the silent step though she has always been quiet since even before her change. For example, Gabriel didn't even hear her with his lycanthrope hearing when she scaled his house and climbed into his bed when they were 14. Because of this: she is now unnaturally quiet which makes her a perfect assassin when they need someone who practically doesn't exist.
Yelena is also a poison master having learned from Celeste, her site and alpha.
Yelena is also one of 2 betas for Celeste which means she has say over lower ranks in the family but she is often too timid to put herself forward.
She has a bad habit of being vindictive and also being a clutz but for the most part Yelena is a very good-natured person unless you do her wrong.
Yelena is a 56-year-old Vaewolf adopted into the Volkov family when she was only 9. She is the strange case of the century for them but a ‘project’ that the matriarch Celeste adores. Yelena wasn’t immediately turned but instead, she was raised until she was the tender age of 18 and that was when the offer was handed to her. She could join their family or she could be sent to live with her uncle who was now asking for her. Yelena didn’t hesitate to take the Volkov last name and their bloodline.

Her life before the Volkovs was not pleasant and much her time was spent in tears if it was even allowed. Born as the only child to a wealthy noble family she was seen as a disgrace from the time she first cried out of the womb. Her father was a nasty individual and he had ended up getting into a spat with one of the faerie court nobles. They had cursed him not only to have a daughter but also once he had that daughter he would bear no more children. Being a noble, he thought his life was over as soon as he discovered the curse was very real.
He took his aggression out on Yelena from an early age. Her mother did nothing to stop it nor was she particularly in love with her daughter either having been poisoned by her father to hate Yelena. Cut to the faithful night that he asked the Volkovs for a favor, a way to break the fae’s curse. He knew that Celeste was very book smart and that if anyone knew of a way to break a curse it was her. Nemesis agreed the two could meet but payment would be had upfront. He would be dealing with Celeste and Nemesis wasn’t quite sure what his wife would want in return.
Celeste did not want the noble’s money but instead, she wanted their family heirloom. It was a powerful artifact or so she thought. However, Yelena’s father was outraged and told her no. When Celeste was about to leave Yelena’s father screamed at her to wait and instead baited Celeste. “You’ve always wanted a child and yours have always died. I’ll sell you mine and when she is an adult you can sell her off to a whore house for all I care.” What the man couldn’t have known was that Celeste had severe post-traumatic stress from when her own people had sold her for star shards.
Nemesis knew this and he issued his wife only one order. “Kill those involved but under no circumstances everyone in the house.” Celeste agreed to take Yelena and turned her over to Nemesis to cover her eyes and her ears so she couldn’t hear the slaughter as Celeste judged those in the house one by one. Four people were ultimately tortured and killed. The most brutal having been Yelena’s parents once Celeste had discovered the bruising on the poor girl.
“We’ll be your parents now Little One. We’ll take care of you, unlike these animals.” Thus began her life as one of the Volkov’s many ‘children’.
Celeste gave Yelena all the love she had ever wanted and Nemesis was supportive of her too. At first, she was skittish and would hide in her room all day but eventually as time went on she joined the family on their many humane activities. She was educated well, spoiled, trained to defend herself, and overall she was accepted which was most important. Yelena’s uncle was a good friend of the Volkov’s and the original person who contacted them for her father had warned them that his brother wasn’t sound of mind. He asked that Yelena be turned over to him but Celeste fearing he had alternate motives for wanting his niece gave her the choice once she was 18.
Becoming a vaewolf was painful but she felt better and stronger than she ever had as a half-human. She was taught higher shadow magic and the art of being stealthy. She could become the eyes and the ears for Celeste often spending time away from home so she could spy on the enemies of the Volkov.
