Kalei was born the noble daughter of the Valerian nobles. She was raised to take over for her mother who was an adviser to the queen and eventually became the second in command for Cathrine after the court system was established.
Early on in life, Kalei did as most nobles did and married. She married another young aristocrat named Jarrod who took her name out of respect. They would have two children almost one after the other and were seemingly happy with their lives. During the war with Adeluna and Egjora their home was one of the first ones raided and all of the Valerians were killed. Her daughters were fifteen and sixteen at the time, they had experienced horror and Kalei had witnessed their murders and rape. She herself had almost been put through the same horror before Cathrine the first had reached them.
Kalei was rescued but at the cost of her entire family’s demise. It was Kalei’s rescue that led to Cathrine’s death and it has weighed heavily on her mind along with the deaths of all her family. Kalei was kept within the walls of the Sundered Gardens while Angela treated her survivor’s guilt and the PTSD that came from what she witnessed.
It would take decades for the Rosenite to be allowed to leave the safety of the Sundered Gardens rejoining society. Her knowledge from being raised as the successor in the Valerian family was used by Cathrine, the current Purple Court Queen, and was offered a new job. Like most Rosenites from that time Kalei offered herself up to the army and trained alongside her sisters in arms. She would eventually undergo the ‘angelification’ process of becoming one of Cathrine’s valkyrie warriors.
Fifty years would pass before a training accident would happen that would change Kalei’s perspective on life yet again. During a field exercise, a young mage lost control of their ice magic on top of a large rune. The rune’s magic became unstable and blew up with icy rage. Kalei had swooped in to save the mage when the magic enveloped her and caused extensive damage to her own body.
As a result, she lost her eyesight to frostbite but the magic that was bound to her by the angelification reacted to the magic from the rune. It caused her wings to become hardened crystal feathers that grew back just like traditional feathers. She would spend months in rehabilitation before her senses adjusted. She saw this incident unlike the Adelunian invasion as a second chance to be renewed as a person. The loss of her eyesight opened up the world in a way she thought was lost and it led her to learn more about it.
She continued to train with the Valkyries using her new senses quickly earning respect in her position as second to Cathrine.
