History
Before Revaliir
Long, long ago, there was a poor land that was plagued by war. This is where Kohaku was born, on the streets during a chaotic era. Back then, he had pure white hair, a common color for nine-tailed foxes before they reach nine tails. His mother died of illness, while his father was never seen, leaving Kohaku alone. Until one day he came across a samurai. He was a human, passing through the war plagued land. But he took Kohaku as his own, becoming his foster father, as well as mentor. He thought Kohaku the ways of a samurai, and the arts of swordsmanship.
The two traveled together for many years, until his father was cut down in battle during one of the many wars. Kohaku was broken-hearted by his father’s death, and became a bitter person. For many years he traveled as a wanderer with his father’s katana, which had been given to him as a gift long before his father died. Over the years, Kohaku became known as “The White Demon” across the lands he traveled through. He had no problem with killing people, and was soon labeled as a “Manslayer”. But those titles brought him trouble.
After wandering to an Empire during a peaceful time, Kohaku found himself surrounded and captured by the Emperor’s men, and was sentenced to death for his crimes. However, Mistress Mai, the Emperor’s only daughter, had seen something in Kohaku that no one else could see, something he thought died long ago. She gave him a choice, a chance to abandon his ways and atone for his crimes. Despite how much her father, and everyone else on that matter, objected to her decision, Mai made Kohaku her personal guard.
It was then that Kohaku served as her loyal protector, though, at first he despised the position he was forced into. But as time went by, the wall he had put around his heart slowly crumbled away. Mai’s kindness towards him started to get to him, and before he knew it, the two fell in love. It was when they shared their first kiss that he became her familiar, expanding their bond further, and soon afterwards he ascended to having nine tails. This was when his hair turned the beautiful red it is today.
The two were to be married one day, hoping to live a very long life together. But then, a neighboring Empire suddenly attacked them, breaking the time of peace they lived in. It was not so much a war as it was a slaughter, and Kohaku fought well during the battle, alongside Kimiko whom was acting as an army Commander at the time. But Kohaku and Kimiko quickly began to realize they could not win the battle. Retreating was their only option. So, Kohaku took Mai, leaving Kimiko behind to buy them time, and sailed with her across the seas to the nearest continent, Revaliir. They were no longer safe in their homeland, for it had fallen.
