BackstoryBaby/Toddler: Veda was born as the fifth child in her family. She had two parents and four other living siblings. The eldest was a boy named Othame, the second was a girl named Elebi, the third was a boy named Robine, and the fourth was a boy named Hevru. Her older brother Othame took care of her as a child while her parents were away working.
Child: Veda grew up learning how to gather garbage from piles left around Vilpamolan city. The family lived in what was known as the slums. The poorest region of the city. Many families lived in their part of the neighborhood and it was run by a pirate lord.
Most pirate lords did not want this part of the city, seeing as most of the streets were piled up with garbage. This garbage consisted of food scraps, filth, mud, torn up parchment, pieces of leather, broken nails, and other items that nobody bothered to pick up.
Except for the children. Stealing in the city was dangerous, seeing as almost everybody there knew how pickpockets worked and were keeping an eye on their pockets. The alternative was the trash that was left everywhere. Nobody kept anything clean.
A child could get paid for cleaning up the front of a store. Hidden amongst the trash was secret treasures. Broken nails could be sold to blacksmiths, torn paper could be sold to others for their fireplaces, glass shards could be sold to glassblowers, and occasionally there was a lost jewel amongst all the garbage.
Veda’s family did not want to be in that city. However, there was little choice. Vilpamolan was one of the few places that a demon could go if they wanted to avoid demon hunters. Jobs were scarce. Most were just passing by but the ones who stayed usually already had allies in the city to help them get far.
Meanwhile the Ingrid family did not have those connections. The parents were new to being demons while the children were born as them. Violence growing up was common. An everyday occurrence. Veda and her siblings were taught how to fight from an early age. Using their teeth to bite and claws to destroy. Any weapon found would be kept and used.
Money was essential for survival. One had to pay tribute to the pirate lords, buy food, buy clothes, and buy supplies to patch up the shack they called a house. Her mum worked as a waitress at a bar while her father worked as a low-class servant for one of the lesser pirate lords.
Teens: The first time she killed another person was when she was 13. Before, she had maimed plenty of people. But she’d never actually destroyed anyone’s life. It happened when her and Hevru had been searching the trash and streets for anything useful. A man had appeared behind her brother and had him pinned down.
The man’s dagger was raised as though he was going to deliver the killing blow. In a moment of panic, Veda leaped at the man. She jabbed her claws into his face and neck. Ignoring the pain of a knife digging into her arm, she kept attacking and attacking. Hevru had to pull her back in order to show that the man was already dead.
Perhaps she ought to have shown more remorse. Her mind did feel guilt. She was guilty. Yet, she would not have changed anything. Any other action might have ended with Hevru dead. No other life was half as important as her family was.
When she was 14, Othame got a job as a low level pirate. The rest of her teenage years was filled with stealing, hiding, scavenging, and finding small easy jobs that could be done well. She was never given an education. She never was taught how to read or write beyond easy common words.
Adult: When she was 18, it was time for her to get a job. Her eldest brother was a pirate. Elebi worked as a food merchant. Robine also worked as a food merchant with Elebi. Hevru was a servant working for some higher up criminals. All of these jobs paid very little. Food merchanting was difficult with little food in the first place. A pirate job was only good when one was on a great crew. Being a servant never paid well.
At age 19, Veda decided to take her chances. She was the last child of a family who had almost nothing. They had come to Vilpamolan for safety and couldn’t get out due to finances. So, Veda left. She had stolen some food from a restaurant after being fired on her first day at work. Then she ran as fast as she could.
Veda had no idea where she was going or what she would do. All she knew was that she couldn’t stay. Her family desperately needed help and she was not going to find that help in that city. She headed out into the unknown world to seek better opportunities. Even if it meant that the demon hunters would come after her. Veda could not sit idly by anymore while her family suffered.
